I saw a post on my dash about deodorant and it felt a little scare-mongery to me. Care to take a look at this quote?: "they contain aluminum which is toxic to the body, and can lead to breast cancer, kidney problems, and even alzheimer’s disease, to name a few problems."

oh lordy.

I mentioned before that the connection between alzheimer and aluminium is still controversial (as in, some studies find a connection, some don’t, some got inconclusive details…). It’s true that alumnium has been found in the plaques associated with Alzheimer, however we don’t know if alumnium causes these plaques or if it simply attaches to them with some preference, making it a side effect rather than the cause. Breast cancer has a similar situation. We have some indications that it may help along cysts and that you shouldn’t use it on freshly shaved armpits (abraded skin -> easier absorption) to be sure.

As for the kidney failure, that’s a clever bit of misinterpretation. You see, people who already *have* impaired renal function should avoid aluminium (from all sources btw, that includes oral) because water soluble aluminium salts - most aluminium doesn’t reach your body in its elemental form - are mainly eliminated over the kidneys, and if your kidneys don’t work as they should, this can lead to accumulation to toxic levels.

Which brings us to the next point: Everything is toxic if you really try. Water can kill you. Salt can. Vitamin can. Iron can. Aluminium is no exception, and it’s a matter of dosage. While aluminium is not necessary for your body’s function, we naturally contain some of it anyways. You can tell for example that aluminium salts had Ld50s that are…. well, huge frankly said. For example aluminium sulfate has an LD50 of 6,2g/kg.

So yeah someone’s fearmongering well, aluminium can be unhealthy for you if you have impaired renal function, everything else is still highly controversial.

(I forgot to respond earlier haha) that is like, three votes for the fourth one, counting one from another friend, so I guess that’s it! I have trouble with little details bc I draw vaguely person shaped thing and i’m like “yeah that’s done right” sooo making decisions about what KIND of details is hard

but I need to carry that style decision through with the rest of that picture... I will work on it.
