NASA's Curiosity rover carries a 1909 VDB Lincoln cent as part of a calibration target for its MAHLI camera. Located on the rover’s robotic arm, the coin provides a familiar size reference for geologists when examining Martian soil and rocks at high resolution. Over more than a decade in Gale Crater, the penny has accumulated thin layers of reddish dust while serving as a durable benchmark for the mission’s imaging systems.
