K What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

ahhh in MOTA I agree with @thebuckys I do think it's john the show is extreemly romantic about john egan and I find it really interesting how partial the shows framing is to him. He is literally the standard bearer at the camps liberation and (I was just rewatching 2016 war and peace and prince Andrei goes down carrying the standard and general kutuzov writes to his father mentioning this) its an incredibly heroic image. I think the way a story reveals a character to us best is the exploration of how that character crumbles and we do witness the exact moment john changes.. its not when gale goes down, its not when he's nearly killed by an angry mob its not even interogation with hausmann. The show frames the change in john on the train, after he sees victims of the hollocaust packed in like livestock and after he watches the germans shoot a guy who tries to escape and throw him back on the train, the last shot of that scene is, the door closing, shutting out the remaining light. John obviously gets eaten away in increments after that- another thing is although john is a yapper, we know him as such, he's never really saying anything too revealing in the opening of the show of course he tells buck he loves him a couple different ways but thats bucky, thats bluster- he still says a couple beautiful and true things here and there but a lot of it is lads on tour... but in the stalag every single thing he says hits, he says fewer words, more precise almost everything he says is like a bag of coins to the face (for gale ) to the point where the words are whittled down to "mmm same" but still incredibly impactful... but you knowww I also think gale has an incredible arc too its a lot more subtle the show doesnt purposefully reveal gales 'weaknesses' to us except through bucky which i think is verrrry interesting! Even the way we have no idea what happens to him till Bucky finds him ----how he almost doesnt exist in a frame without bucky??/ its interesting to me. I think alsooo sorry this is long now but we only see gale salute once, on his way home and god he looks so fucking tired, his uniform does't fit him anymore , he's not sure of anything hes done (even though we never see him question this like bucky does) all of gales uncertainty and quirkiness is in ausbuts performance (whhich is why the whole he's giving nothing ... thing just does not make sense to me- that part is written very nothing and yetttt)

The way the above is basically a head canon !! But I do headcanon with severe sexual trauma not just because he's my favorite but in particular because sex for him is so transactional and i don't even mean it in a skeevy way i mean in the sense that he trades sex for emotional connection or loyalty or labour im not sure what the right word is but he sleeps with lil and he expects that their together now, probably will get married and shes like.. no... and the same thing goes with paulina, they fuck once and hes like well now that i've paid the toll are you going to be my wife now, have i passed the test. I was thinking about this a lot listening to 'never have sex' because the relationship he has with gale is so different to either of the relationships with women. He expects things, he wants bang for his buck - with gale he's ready to just give and give and give but i disgressss idk does that make- sense??

Oh god there’s so many swirling around in my head -

I do subscribe to Bucky not being very close with his family - lack of letters in the stalag , him running off to join the army before Pearl Harbor etc

But @irregularcollapse has Bucky being the only boy and the youngest of *five older sisters who have kids and families of their own and Bucky being an anomaly in that way and staying the baby forever , and never quite achieving the set up he’d been brought up to believe was the right way ! And so i’m really a Bucky Egan baby brother believer he really has baby brother energy .

I think John and his dad butt heads A LOT. Robert Mitchum is my John Sr face claim lmao and in b’s and my art AU there’s a pre canon scene where John sr catches him having a threesome with manitowoc buck and a girl friend of theirs.

He is an extremely conservative Irish catholic man and goes absolutely ballistic. Nearly strangling Bucky before calmly taking his bedroom door off.

John’s dad’s problem is that he didn’t want a child, he wanted a business partner. I think he finds Bucky hard to tolerate because here’s this kid that’s so like him in so many ways but also so not, and it feels like a slight .

Buckys dad makes a lot of the things in the house , the kitchen cupboards , their dining table etc and to him that makes sense and is practical . Bucky being an artist and going to art school and having threesomes with a boy is just not.

But then Bucky has his father’s willfulness and his difficulty with authority so he’s not a child who’s going to fall into line either …. He’s also his only son . I think it’s very complicated and not resolvable up at the Egan house!😭 if any of this makes sense bc it’s 3 am

Bucky’s not sure where this conversation is going, he rarely is, but he feels his stomach clench in anticipation. She’s always saying something and this place is a hard enough pill for him to swallow already.

“No.” he says softly, twisting his tongue around his bottom lip. It's barely loud enough to hear over the low music and quiet chatter in the store, just beyond the curtains, but she does all the same.

“No?” she asks, rising from her perch on the divan—“take your shirt off”— it’s dry and she’s barely looking at him when she says it and so, of course, he does. “No?” she presses on, right up in his face, the tips of her boots kissing the tips of his, the backs of his fingers gently tap tapping against the necklaces draping her chest and sternum as he goes from button to button, undoing them, looking his big aubergine nose down at her in a smirk.

Paulinas eyes are barely even level with his and still he can feel the backs of his knees buckling slightly as he resists crumpling to meet them, the weight of her cool gaze undeniable to him and inevitable, inevitable as the sun rising every morning and setting at night.

“No?”— and she’s grinning now too.

I am so curious to see Gale interacting with Buckypaul in the art au. Auto correct wants to say Gale interfering and lol maybe 🤔🧐

hi darlinggg curlssss i had a go at this with a few stops and starts and its kinda just bucky dropping (yay) but with the spectre of paulina hanging over them?? though gale doesn't really know.... whats going on they do interact more in parts 1 + 2 which @irregularcollapse is writing.

99% of the true nature of their relatiionship goes undetected to gale because he is so dazzled by them and he's really operating under the illusion of what it is it takes to "do the work" as everyone is at art school oifxvmodism

Through the mire of his thoughts Bucky surfaces, finding himself staring into the display window of the Vietnamese place on St Marks. Unassuming east village locals and romanticist tourists eat, their minds on the world outside. 

That blond kid is there, Gale Cleven , the 2nd year from Paulinas class, slashing away at a sketchbook. It hit him like a bomb, the deja vu, the blond head, long fingers on  finely formed hands, all that golden skin. The image had been stuck somewhere in his mind and is presently being unearthed. 

All the pressure of the day— the last ten thousand years— between this morning and now—  shushes out of him like air in a neglected balloon. The kids hands stop first, his pencil loosing its momentum and fluidity, then his palm, separating slowly from the page it had been weighing down. His eyes have found Bucky’s shoes, shins, knees, the tops of his thighs and further up they climb, drinking him like a cyclone. 

“Gale” he mouths through the glass, caught, and gale raises his hand, a little hesitantly at first, in reply.  He starts to get up but Bucky discourages it with a wave, saying “I’m just passing through—very nice” and he’s pointing at his sketch book, pressing his face into the glass.

Bashfully, Gale mouths back “Thank you”, cheeks gone rosey. This makes Bucky grin, his personality catching up with him again. 

Gale re-grips the pencil, starts to write the letter “Y—” abruptly drawing a line through the open junction of  the V and writing the letter T. He continues, “That Thing Heavy?”

Bucky flickers for a moment, face twisted down to read, and then coughs out a laugh.“Heavy is the head,” he yells through the pane. He’s turned all the way up now, patting the garment bag across his shoulder, “Glad rags” and he sticks his tongue out like a possum, eyes alive and squinty. Gales hand stutters on the page.

This guys name was Rosie, Rosie Rosenthal. He was a New York native, born and bred in Astoria, Queens and he had a grown up job. Gale had been drawn to his name mostly, 'Rosie', for a guy. There was something obscene about it, provocative. Marge had called it elegant and it was that too but there was something more. There was a rebelliousness to the claiming of a name like that. Rosie would have had to fight his way, bloody and screaming, out of a place like Casper, Wyoming.

Curlsssss so so crazy to me when you were feeling bad about writting and saying you couldn’t write things with real character or meaning I’m paraphrasing and not to put you on blast here but you are another writer who’s voice is incredibly distinct and the detail with which you dissect and execute all your ideas literally makes me feel insane!

You write experiences down to microscopic levels. Still thinking about oss Gale which was like willl I like thissss I’m scared I never really understand gender bending on character like that but you always seem to know exactly what you set out to do and the way that fic has stuck with me I told you I read it at my grandmas house. Bucky having his queer awakening whilst sleeping with fem! Gale was such a feat and whwjwjdjdnd still thinking bout hole in sock skinny jeans valentine the destroyer Gale
