i rarely write stuff here but I just need to vent about how annoying the queerbaiting in netlix’s new show “curon” is. (spoilers ahead)
so I started watching this show out of my love for spooky stuff, and got very positively surprised during the first episode where one of the characters (a girl, Micki) was obviously interested in the main girl character (Daria), and they even kissed at a party (albeit drunk). I was excited to see the romance unveil as I thought that showing stuff like that in the first minutes of the first episode will lead to something. unfortunately, during the next episodes, it became obvious that the wlw romance won’t take place.
so here’s what annoyed me in this show regarding lesbian representation:
- Daria, the main girl, gives out kind of gay vibes, she has a side shave and dresses kind of “tomboyishly”. she also seems kid of interested in Micki at the party. but later on, it turns out she’s apparently not interested in Micki (or maybe in girls in general?), and she has a romance with Micki’s brother (yikes)
- I feel like the writers wanted to show that assuming someone’s orientation because of their appearance is wrong, and that Micki is kind of a “predatory” lesbian that pursues a straight girl without taking hints. But I feel like having one stereotypically gay looking character to be gay is still something we don’t have in TV, especially with wlw, and it would be more revolutionary to just make the girls love each other, not trying to make a point with “boo hoo not everyone you think is gay is actually gay, surprise here’s another ordinary straight romance”
- starting a show with a whole sequence of what looks like a beginning of a wlw romance and then throwing it away is a case of extremely sad queerbating
- additionally, Micki is abused bc she’s not interested in men. Okay, her family is generally accepting of that, but the whole story with Lucas getting angry, outing her, and then his doppelganger trying to assault Micki really sucks, we don’t need more gays being assaulted for their sexual orientation
honestly I’m just super angry bc the kiss at the beginning really set my expectations high and it just hurt to have hope (we don’t have enough healthy wlw relationships in horror movies) and then be disappointed. I’m just tired of this “lesbians having unreciprocated crush” trope
the show itself is kind of predictable and not the best, it has some interesting elements, good soundtrack and sometimes nice shots but the queerbating really spoiled it all up to me :( does anyone have similar feelings about this show?
