Stress Relief Tips: Current Events
Hey guys! So, with everything going on right now, I know I’ve found myself in some distress. You all can probably relate! Whether you’re an essential worker or at home trying to figure out how to pay all your bills, you probably are a LITTLE past the point of eustress (a good point of stress where you are challenged but not overwhelmed).
SO.
What better time to mention some stress-prevention tips? It may not change your situation but these tips may help you to cope with it, prevent excess stress, and stay positive!
On the organizational level:
1. Goal Setting:
> Right now, many employees are experiencing a thing called “flextime” in their position, which means that they can pick and choose the hours they work, due to the stay at home orders. Goal setting to make sure tasks and projects are completed in a timely manner can take away some of the stress that comes with choosing your own hours.
> Some people are better suited to work from home than others. If you have a big project you knew how to complete from the office but not so much from home, call your manager/boss/etc to see about negotiating the duties and tasks involved. This should help you to hone in on how to complete your tasks as well as eliminate some of the stress involved in doing the parts of the project you personally are not comfortable with attempting at home.
3. Social Support Systems:
> My business partners and I actually just did something in this category. Team Building and social support in this current situation might not be easy since no one can meet face to face, but try scheduling a company game night on the “House Party” app or just a zoom meeting to check in on each other. Support from the people you work with may help you feel less alone and more confident in doing the work.

On the personal level:
1. Exercise!
> Don’t have access to a gym now? No problem! Get online and visit a gym website. Some are actually streaming live workouts (that’s what I’ve been doing). Exercise gets you moving and helps to prevent and manage stress.
> If you (like me!) spend a lot of time doing work right now, whether it be with online classes or working from home, it can take a toll on you mentally. To prevent stress from a strenuous workload, make sure to leave some time in the day to do something fun like drawing, painting, or even just reading a good book (or, whatever you like to do for fun).
> It’s common knowledge that you feel better if you’re consistently eating healthy. That 3rd bowl of mac n’ cheese might sound nice in the moment, but if you want to prevent stress and not feel bloated and gross later on in the day, you may want to skip it.
>If you’re starting to feel that stress creeping up, try out some relaxation training like meditation or breathing exercises.
> You probably know the saying “don’t sweat the small stuff.” Well... if you’re constantly focusing on the negative and what stresses you out, you’re going to be stressed! Try looking on the bright side of things!
