whale sharks are surprisingly sight-oriented creatures, which can be a problem when you consider that their eyes are just sort of sitting there naked and unprotected on the sides of their heads, since whale sharks don’t have eyelids!
never fear though, in the event of an eyeball-related emergency, a whale shark can actually slurp its eyeballs back into its head like a startled turtle withdrawing into its shell.

and if THAT doesn’t work, the whale shark’s entire non-pupil eyeball is covered with a layer of the same microscopic tooth-shaped scales that cover their skin, giving them a light armor bonus against physical damage!
