PRS Custom 22 10-Top
When I was fairly new to guitar, a PRS was my dream guitar. What model? Didn’t matter. They were the pinnacle of design, with (theoretically) the contours of a strat and the fat tone of an LP. I could imagine no better instrument. I got a well paid commission job shortly out of high school, saved my checks, and proudly purchased this beautiful Custom 22 with a one-piece 10-top brand new from Guitar Center.
I, uh, never cared for it. Its acoustic presence was thin, its electric presence lacked the body and power of a Les Paul, and it didn’t clean up and articulate like a Strat. I didn’t really understand at the time that it was its own thing, that it had its own voice - I was too busy comparing it to these benchmarks and standards that I had in my mind, which is unfair. If I wanted it to sound like a Les Paul, I should have bought a Les Paul. So, I traded it for a Les Paul.

I am now a big fan of Jet City Amplification. They team up with master amp designers like Mike Soldano and (in this case) Martin Kidd to make some kickass, yet affordable amplifiers. So how is the tone of the Jet City Custom 22? Watch the demo below:

A lovely new guitar winged its way across the Atlantic into my hands today: aPRS Guitars Custom 22 with Bare Knuckle Pickups Juggernaut and VHII pickups. It sounds lovely, a beautiful complement to my Modern Eagle - a little livelier and more mid-focussed despite having the same pickup combination in both.
