Custom Gate Casters

We have touched on the standard gate casters we offer in the past (click HERE for a refresher) to showcase a great solution to supporting heavy doors and gates.  Gate casters use a large stem equipped with a spring and side-mount bracket that allow them to self-adjust for variances in the terrain over which they travel.  The standard gate casters have rubber or semi-pneumatic wheels that give a little extra cushion as they roll.

It has always been our philosophy here at C.E. Clarke & Son, Inc. that if one of our customers has a special request or application, then most likely, another will have a need for the same thing.  So recently, when a customer requested a gate caster that had a cast iron wheel instead of a rubber wheel, we decided it would be a great addition to our product line.  Using a cast iron wheel instead of rubber offers a higher level of wheel durability, as rubber can eventually break down with normal wear.  So by simply swapping out the rubber wheel for a cast iron wheel, we provided the caster pictured here:

...but we weren’t done...

We decided that while a cast iron wheel might be an improvement in the durability department, it would not be very kind to any tile or polished floors that might require a little bit softer wheel.  So with that in mind, we also put a polyurethane on iron wheel in the gate caster frame as seen below.

Custom Casters - Putting Together The Pieces

Here at C.E. Clarke & Son, Inc., we occasionally get asked to "make" a certain caster or wheel that is somewhat specialized and not a standard product offering.  The only problem with that is that we do not actually "make" (manufacture) anything here.  We are strictly a distributor of materials handling equipment, representing many different manufacturers, and stocking and selling their products.  However, just because we do not manufacture anything, does not mean that we cannot offer a fully customized product offering.  Here's how we do it:

1.  MANUFACTURERS WE REPRESENT

As stated above, we represent many different manufacturers of all types of materials handling equipment.  The main categories of this being casters and wheels, hand trucks and dollies, carts, dock and cargo equipment, and storage equipment.  We also carry many product lines that are related to these like shipping supplies, floor mats, lift equipment, van ramps, and ladders.  We have been in the materials handling equipment business since 1924, and in that time have built strong and lasting relationships with many suppliers of these types of products.  So, by offering such a wide variety of specialty products, as well as representing many different manufacturers of the same types of products (i.e. 20+ different caster manufacturers), we have access to just about any product you might need.  The list below has many of the suppliers we deal with regularly:

2.  FABRICATORS WE WORK WITH

Sometimes, even with all of the manufacturer's products we have at our disposal, there is still a need for a custom product.  Just as we have built relationships with our manufacturers, so too have we built relationships with local machine shops and custom fabricators.  Some examples of custom items we get from local shops regularly are our UHMW caster wheels, which are custom made for washdown applications, and our hand truck and appliance dolly modifications such as reinforced frames and additional caster supports.

3.  OUR 90 YEARS OF COMBINED EXPERIENCE

C.E. Clarke & Son, Inc. is now celebrating our 90th year in business, and we are in our 5th generation of family ownership and operation.  The knowledge and expertise brought to the company by each generation has been built upon and passed on to each generation to follow.  The wealth of experience in dealing with materials handling and storage equipment enables us to successfully "look outside the box" when coming up with custom solutions.
