Polyvinyl Customer Spotlight: Andy Dewar
Part #2 of our Customer Spotlight series, featuring words from Polyvinyl super fan, Andy Dewar!
Since the day I was born, there was music in the house. Elvis, Johnny Cash, and a lot of hip jazz records from the fifties/early sixties. I remember listening to the Royal Guardsmen and Vaughn Monroe on my Winnie the Pooh record player. I saw Johnny Cash at the Indiana State Fair when I was six and Elvis in Bloomington, IN when I was twelve.
My first record was Dynamite, a compilation on K-tel Records, my Grandma got it for me for Christmas (I'm sure mom may have given her inside information.) But the seeds of my collecting started after I heard "Love Reign O'er Me" on the car radio. It was a few years after it had been released and it started me on a binge that didn't stop until I had all of the Who's records. A few years later, while record shopping a friend casually said: "John says the new Minutemen album is good." Down the rabbit hole I went. Minutemen, then Black Flag, then The Meat Puppets, then Hüsker Dü, then... I've never been the same.
Fast forward a few decades. I bought Of Montreal's Snare Lustrous Doomings for no other reason than it looked cool. Hooked. Buying more of their records on Polyvinyl I noticed a few other bands that I liked, Beach Slang, Xiu Xiu, Japandroids, so I started ordering. La Sera, Deerhoof, White Reaper, STRFKR... On and on. I think have nearly everything in your catalog.
My favorite? Hard to say. Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan's album is awesome. Then, so is Deerhoof's Magic. And just try to find "the best" album from Of Montreal. Oh yeah, what about STRFKR's latest?
For someone who is just starting? Well, it's different now. You can go to Bandcamp or Stream on Spotify so you can sample before you buy. But when I started, if you wanted to hear it, you bought it. There was just no way to preview something that wasn't on mainstream radio. I guess I recommend buy what you like and occasionally just try something new, different, something that challenges your taste.
Ok, the loaded question, the most prized item in my collection? Turns out, the most difficult question turns out to be the easiest. My most prized item in the collection is the collection itself. I love browsing my own library. Pulling out albums I haven't heard in ages, binging on different bands, playing home DJ. I love the look, feel and even smell of albums. It has taken decades to achieve, and it grows every day.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT: Tyler Purcell
How did you get into collecting records? What was your first record? My first record was the Golden Light remixes ep that I picked up from a STRFKR concert in Jacksonville, FL, as it was the only way to get that last bit of their discography at the time. The first ordered LPs I got were SSLYBY'S Tape Club and Skeletal Lamping. What is your most prized item in your record collection? I have this Richard Simmons album, and no matter how many times I look at it, it puts a smile on my face.
How did you hear about Polyvinyl? I found out about the label through of Montreal, but I really fell in love with the label through the15-year sampler.
Favorite Polyvinyl album in your collection? Reptilians. While STRFKR and other PV artists have put out fantastic albums in the time since, but I have a certain attachment to it, especially to "Death as a Fetish".
Any advice for someone that might be starting to collect records? Don't be afraid to take risks. If you're looking at a new band, like Pillar Point for instance, take that leap. Grab that preorder, and odds are that you'll find something that you love about them.
