sometimes it's just ignorance rather than bad will, you know. Think about how you thought a few years back about race and sexuality and gender, not everyone has tumblr educate them :)

I know, you're right, but there's been enough of a fuss about it in the media that i feel like, even if you don't actually know what it's all about, "black people say it's offensive, so even if i don't understand why, maybe i'll refrain" isn't too much to ask for, tbh. it's different from ten years ago, when no one questioned it. now claiming ignorance (about this particular subject) is a bit dodgy, imho (by which i do not mean that i'll actively avoid her or be unfriendly, obviously. i do have manners :p)

dressing up as Zwarte Piet (with black makeup and the full costume) is at best, bad taste, and at worst really racist. He's represented as a caricature of a dumb black slave who serves a white man. White people dressing up as him can 'make fun' of equating being black with being silly and subordinate, but as soon as they wash off the makeup, they leave the role behind - which is something black people can't do. It perpetuates stereotypes that are harmful to black people (and glorifies our colonialist past, which is dodgy too).

It's also really revealing everyone thinks it's normal that the Sint, who was originally Turkish, has become a white man - he's smart and powerful, isn't he? But making Zwarte Piet white (and/or every other colour) is apparently unthinkable because tradition!!!.
