Kimi to Idol Precure - So far
Quick update with some thoughts and opinions thus far as I do watch it alongside all the others and we are now well over the half way mark. I'll say this much, the designs are awesome! Precure attires have looked messy and busy in recent years but why these look like they should tick that box to, it's done just enough in a way that it balances out and comes together. As of EP 31, however, this series derailed and I can pinpoint exactly where and that is about EP 17-20 where Zukyoon and Kiss first appeared and no, it's not because they appeared, they appeared at a bad time, where the original trio really could have done with the moment to step up and shine. Idol, Wink and Kyun Kyun should have been the ones to save Cuttin, they had that personal and emotional tie, they could have had a new song and the debut of the other two could have happened a couple of eps later. Then we save Zakkuri with out knowing the fate of Cuttin, when so much more could have happened with him between, which I think would have been better before turning another villain good.
It started off as quirky and fun, had a nice balance of low key Idol activity and Precure but now it seems they've all got swept away in the popularity. In which case, I want to see them dive all in on this and have them start to struggle, juggling all these extra lives they're living, all this attention and demand but not enough hours in the day and how they overcome it. After all their identities are meant to be a secret so they can't rely on anyone else. Heck maybe even a popularity rift, don't let it be all sunshine and rainbows. Meanwhile this weeks ep was so dumb, as if it was not obvious to anyone watching who centre was going to be? (I'll admit, if they had kept rotating, it would have been a twist) but this is something that should have occurred sooner, like an ep or two after Kyun Kyun, there were three that point. They could have also kept ZukyoonKiss as a rival duo for a bit, just let them do their own thing, build each other up some before joining as one. That could have been a plot thread all on its own. Anyway, cast wise -
Idol - She has this whole thing with Kaito going on and she likes to sing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Her best trait is the fact she's not on a constant sugar high like other Pinks. (It doesn't help that all I see is Ichigo every time she does something) Wink - The forgotten one for the most part, aside from the little thing Zakkurin, she seems to have become the teams therapist and mediator. (Again though, it's another pretty and gentle looking blue cure). Kyun Kyun - A surprisingly nice balance of knowledgeable fangirl and kohai and still with a personality of her own. Because of this, I'd even say she gets the most attention. (I like her more than I thought I was going to). Purirun / Cure Zukyoon - Purirun fine, a good fairy mascot. Zukyoon nope, she showed up a few eps too early and the show just hasn't been able to get back to what it was. (I do like how they are the first new set of black and white Cures though, even if Zukyoon sometimes seems green?) Meroron / Cure Kiss - Meroron also fine, salvageable if this mini character arc is pulled off right. Kiss, also nope, especially after this week where she's started pulling tricks out of thin air. (One can only hope this gets picked up and explained next week).
Tanaka - The highlight he really is, the guy is a great support and such a hard worker, what's he on, like his fourth job now? It's impressive. Glad his fairy reveal wasn't just a one off thing and it cameo's now and then. (take note Wonderful, this how you assist well with out making them seem candidates for the actual Precure team). Kaito - The guy is as bland as they come and this is our top tier idol? Cardboard is more interesting, his most interesting trait at the mo is why does he look like Jogi?. Betting he's also a fairy though! Cuttin/Zakkuri - Mishandled after being saved but now they exist to lighten the load for poor Tanaka. Both being actual fairies did catch me off guard though. Jogi - New guy, is fun at the mo, he either is Kaito or a brother or something of Kaito, they will be connected in some way. Chokkirine - She showed up for one fight which was fun and nothing since, you would have thought she'd be stepping up more now her henchmen are gone. I'm also going assume that Kyun Kyun will be the one to save her. (Unless something happens to Jogi first?)
At least the big EB has been proactive in this series! Not just a name and nothing from them until the end of the series.
Kimi to is rapidly becoming a case of just adding stuff with out explanation, last weeks power up came out of nowhere and didn't even address it or ask questions. I don't know if its desperation of some kind, maybe a touch of laziness, just trying to find something that sticks or that maybe it is none of the above and this is all part of some bigger plan for later down the line?
The series so far isn't terrible, it's still an easy watch; it can be fun still and the cast are decent enough. It just needs to pick a direction, a focus point going forward, after all, were entering the time for the finale building blocks and there just has to be more to it than got to defeat the EB.
They can all sing pretty well and their individuals song are characteristically fitting. However, I am going to give it to Wink at the mo, her stage is gorgeous, her song is still encouraging with out the overly energetic vibe of Idols. It feels unique, the others feel a little cliché.
