ill probably try to talk more about this in a review but donkey kong country: tropical freeze is a really good game that unfortunately squanders the potential of its premise. 

When you start up the game for the first time you're thinking "man is this whole game gonna be ice levels?". only to be dropped into a typical jungle world for the first level. "huh well that was a good classic donkey kong country feel so they must be setting up for the snow", only to then go into an autumny windmill zone. this repeats, the next zone is literally the polar (no pun intended) opposite of snow, a lush summery savannah. by the time you reach world 5, you've all but forgotten about the snowy conceit of the game's title. 

It's halfway through world 5 that it finally hits you, the ice. The game sets you up learning the new mechanics of the world as always, then halfway through you get to the frozen area and it completely changes those mechanics with a new ice motif. It keeps the core of them, but adds new layers so it feels like this would be exactly how this specific level would change with ice. 

It was a perfect shift, and its a shame more of the game isnt like that because the idea of going halfway through a world, thinking you've figured it out only to have it tossed on its head while retaining a bit of familiarity is a great one that should've been executed more. 

That's not to say it's a bad game, quite the opposite, but it had a lot more potential and the fact that one of the worlds does this so well while the others lack it entirely is really depressing.

I wonder what caused the decision to make ground zeroes a separate package. Like it really just feels like a demo if you take away the side stuff even down to the cut off at the end and the prompt to download the trailer for MGS V. Like sure it's replayable and there is the aforementioned side stuff but like the Bravely Default demo had content that wasn't in the full game and was around the same length for free. It's even more odd when you consider they're getting more negative press than good at the moment from people saying how it's not worth the price. All in all it just feels like a bad idea that will hurt them in the long run. People who love metal gear will obviously buy this and MGS V but other people will probably end up looking at how rough the value is for this and A) not be aware of MGS as a series and assume when MGS V comes out it will be super short as well, or B) feel cheated and swear off the whole series. What a weird thing.
