cybergodzilla sketch from last night
I think it would be cool to see a play on the Kiryu concept of having Godzilla's bones be used as the base for Mechagodzilla by having more than just bones.
Imagine something closer to cybergodzilla from the animated series, but in a classic Tokusatsu style. Like Godzilla almost wearing a Mechagodzilla as armor, with parts of his organic body still exposed.
I just think it would be neat
“Fuck you, son”
Cyber-Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (All Incarnations)
Cyber-Godzilla (Godzilla: The Series)
Cyber-Godzilla is the revived and cybernetically enhanced corpse of the original Zilla from the 1998 film—making him Godzilla Junior's biological father, though their relationship is purely antagonistic (Archnemesis Dad). After being killed by F-18s on the Brooklyn Bridge, the Leviathan aliens retrieve his body and rebuild him as an undead, heavily-armed cyborg serving as their Dragon in the "Monster Wars" arc. His body is visibly decaying with grayed fins, browning skin, missing teeth, and his roar has degenerated into an undead moan—clear Body Horror. His right arm is completely replaced with a robotic limb, he has a dish built into his chest that can reflect sonic attacks (as demonstrated against the Giant Bat), and his dorsal plates have multiple missile launchers attached. Unlike in the film, Cyber-Godzilla now possesses a Breath Weapon—traditional blue atomic breath rather than his son's green, making him Truer to the Text as a "proper" Godzilla. Despite these enhancements making him Came Back Strong compared to his original form, he's still a Flawed Prototype compared to Godzilla Junior, lacking mobility due to decay and added cybernetic weight. His Long-Range Fighter design proves his undoing when Junior easily outmaneuvers him in close combat, with Cyber-Godzilla failing to land a single blow before having his arm blown off (accidentally by Leviathan friendly fire), chest ripped open, and vital circuitry torn out in a Family-Unfriendly Death. His manipulation tactics (Luke, I Am Your Father) represent a Took a Level in Jerkass from his original animal intelligence.
Mechagodzilla (Toho - Showa Era)
The Showa Mechagodzilla (1974-1975) is an alien invasion weapon created by the Black Hole Planet 3 aliens (Simians/apes). Initially disguised as Godzilla through a fake skin covering, it's a silver robotic replica with colorful missile ports and a blocky, distinctly alien aesthetic. Armed as a Walking Armory, it fires finger missiles, eye lasers, a devastating chest beam, possesses a force field, can rotate its head to fire a rainbow beam, and is capable of flight. The design emphasized overwhelming firepower—a true Beam Spam approach to combat. After being decapitated by Godzilla in its first appearance, it's rebuilt for Terror of Mechagodzilla where it teams with the kaiju Titanosaurus. Weaknesses include head destruction, magnetic interference, and vulnerability in close-range combat despite its heavy armor. As an Evil Knockoff of Godzilla created for conquest, it represents pure Alien Invasion threat and establishes the Mechagodzilla legacy as Godzilla's mechanical archenemy. It's remote-controlled by the aliens with basic combat AI.
Mechagodzilla (Toho - Heisei Era)
The Heisei Mechagodzilla (1993) is a human-created UN anti-Godzilla weapon built using futuristic technology and incorporating remnants of Mecha-King Ghidorah from the future. Sleek and heavily armored with a diamond coating capable of reflecting and absorbing energy beams, it represents humanity's attempt to counter Godzilla with pure technology. Weapons include the devastating plasma grenade launcher, mega buster beam, G-Crusher system specifically designed to target Godzilla's secondary brain and G-Cells, shock anchors, and flight capability when combined with the Garuda support craft to form Super Mechagodzilla. The diamond coating that made it so effective proved its undoing—after Fire Rodan's Heroic Sacrifice empowered Godzilla with the red spiral ray, Mechagodzilla absorbed too much energy and overloaded. Human-piloted, it represents the theme of technology versus nature. Its greatest strength (energy absorption) became its Achilles' Heel when overwhelmed.
Mechagodzilla (Toho - Millennium Era/Kiryu)
Kiryu (2002-2003) is the most unique Mechagodzilla, built around the actual skeletal remains and DNA of the original 1954 Godzilla by the JSDF. This Cyborg nature makes it part Haunted Technology, as the original Godzilla's spirit/memories can take control, causing berserk rampages marked by red eyes and roaring while destroying Tokyo (inadvertently avenging its own death). When controlled, Kiryu is an Impossibly Graceful Giant capable of leaping over attacks, ducking Godzilla's breath, and engaging in Good Old Fisticuffs with dozens of punches. Weapons include maser blades (Blade Below the Shoulder), Type-0 and Type-4 railguns (Arm Cannon), mouth-fired maser cannon, and most notably the Absolute Zero Cannon—a Freeze Ray that reduces targets to absolute zero, causing atomic collapse (though Awesome, but Impractical due to charging time and battery drain, later replaced with Triple Hyper Maser Cannon). Kiryu's design takes cues from Neon Genesis Evangelion's bio-mecha concept and Super Sentai's Dragon Caesar/Dragonzord. Despite being a Glass Cannon compared to previous Mechagodzillas, Kiryu's martial arts skills and variety of utilities make it a Jack of All Stats. The character arc culminates in It Has Been an Honor when Kiryu's self-awareness leads it to carry Godzilla to sea rather than kill him, recognizing their shared identity—essentially Redemption Equals Death (or retirement).
Mechagodzilla (Monsterverse)
The Monsterverse Mechagodzilla (2021's Godzilla vs. Kong) is created by Apex Cybernetics, powered by Hollow Earth energy and controlled via a psionic link through the skull of King Ghidorah (salvaged from King of the Monsters). This angular, blocky cybernetic design emphasizes agility over Godzilla-mimicry, with red energy accents, humanoid proportions, and extensive use of thrusters for high-speed movement. Weapons include the devastating proton scream (red energy beam), Macross Missile Massacre salvos, drill punch, and tail drill. Initially controlled by Ren Serizawa, the Ghidorah consciousness overrides the system, turning Mechagodzilla into a rampaging extension of the three-headed dragon's will—making it a Composite Character threat combining mechanical might with alien malice. It overpowers an exhausted Godzilla until Kong intervenes; the team-up using Kong's axe (charged with atomic breath) finally destroys it. Thematically, it represents corporate hubris and humanity's dangerous attempt to control Titan power, with vulnerability to control system disruption (famously an alcohol spill on the console in one scene).
Comparison
Cyber-Godzilla serves as an expy primarily of Mechagodzilla as a concept—a cybernetic/mechanical counterpart to Godzilla serving antagonistic forces—with specific parallels to Millennium's Kiryu. Like Kiryu, Cyber-Godzilla is literally built from a deceased Godzilla's body (making both Composite Characters of organic and mechanical elements), creating an undead cyborg rather than a pure robot. The "father versus son" dynamic of Cyber-Godzilla fighting Godzilla Junior echoes Kiryu's internal conflict between the 1954 Godzilla's soul and its programmed mission. Both represent "what Godzilla would be as a machine," though Cyber-Godzilla leans into horror (decaying flesh, undead appearance) while Kiryu is more heroic despite its haunted nature.
Compared to the Showa version's alien-controlled Walking Armory approach, Cyber-Godzilla is more restrained in weapons (missiles, chest reflector, atomic breath) but shares the theme of being Reforged into a Minion by extraterrestrials (Leviathan aliens vs. Black Hole Planet 3). Both serve as The Dragon in alien invasion plots.
The Heisei Mechagodzilla's theme of human technology countering Godzilla contrasts with Cyber-Godzilla's alien resurrection, though both are ultimately defeated by the "natural" Godzilla's superior evolution. The energy absorption/reflection mechanic appears in both—Heisei's diamond coating and Cyber-Godzilla's chest dish.
The Monsterverse version's corporate creation and psionic control via Ghidorah skull parallels how Cyber-Godzilla is controlled through cybernetic implants, and both represent corrupted/hijacked technology turned against humanity. However, Monsterverse Mechagodzilla is built from scratch rather than from a corpse.
The key distinction is that Cyber-Godzilla is explicitly an undead kaiju with cybernetic enhancements rather than a robot built to resemble Godzilla, making it the most "organic" of all Mechagodzilla variants while still fulfilling the mechanical doppelganger role. Its defeat—having circuitry ripped out in close combat—demonstrates that despite upgrades, it couldn't match its naturally-evolved son, much like how various Mechagodzillas ultimately fall to Godzilla's adaptive superiority.
Polished sketch commission for Fcaiser @ dA showing Mechagodzilla III and Cybergodzilla having a cute.
I have to say, one of the most original characters I ever got asked to draw in a lovey-dovey situation. Upon a bit of internet browsing, though, it turn out there's a huuuuge amount of kaiju shipping going on.
And thus, I get to meet a new corner of the internet.
