Technology and the Workplace: Effect on our Relationships at Work. By Sana Kirmani
Technology as a whole has an immense impact on the workplace. Even with digital technology not included, tasks are being carried out in the most efficient and sophisticated of methods. These sectors include the science industry, the media as they are constantly upping their game on their scoop endeavours, factory’s are changing their floor plans to keep themselves fresh and head to head with competitors. Even small mom-and-pop stores are branching out to new goods and services thanks to information that is now made available to them by technology itself. (Purcell, Rainie 2014) Technology has unsurprisingly reached phenomenon-status. Dan T. Pickett refers to it as “The Internet of Everything Impacting Everything” (2015). In addition, it is said that the pace of technological change itself will accelerate at astonishing speed within the next ten to fifteen years (Karoly, Panis). For the most part, technological advances are having a positive effect on the workplace.
The Magnificence of the Conference Call
At the workplace, working in unison with your team would have meant everyone would be gathered in a sterile room with a whiteboard, a long table, and perhaps a bagel. However, with the introduction of Skype and conference calling, it becomes much easier to share screens, send finals and receive feedback from colleagues in a timely manner.
According to Puskar, 79% of people work in virtual teams”. Yet for some reason, there seems to be a preference among employees of using “yesterday’s tools” including the white board, the long table, and the bagel. (Burg, 2013) The drawback of this, is that workplaces miss out on the benefits today’s technology has to offer because they’d rather go back to the drawing board. Why? Because according to this article, they miss the productivity that came with it. This means the effect technology has on workplace can be a double edged sword- while maximizing convenience it can minimize importance, attention span and the patience people have with each other during collaborations. This is because technology has allowed us to send information back and forth fast, and we have become accustomed to that. So when it isn’t fast, workers may find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated and impatient with each other. (Burg, 2013).
Still, one of the key features about technology is that it can bridge the gap between people. Worker to client, business to the masses, boss to worker and worker to worker. Burg brings up the example of Ferrazzi using social media to converse with her clients and being able to text, video chat or conference call with her team. It made her feel closer to them and that’s the fuzzy, heartwarming feature social media has in the work place. Ferrazzi says when people have best friends at work, productivity improves greatly and is one of the “key factors on employee engagement”. (Burg 2013)
