Release of the Day: URETHANE - "Chasing Horizons" (Cyber Tracks) Famed skateboarder/guitarist Steve Caballero is the notable name behind the California melodic punk band URETHANE and it's a worthy one to be associated with. This LP immediately takes me back to mid-90s full-lengths on Dr. Strange, Fearless, and Fat Wreck, chock full of mid-to-fast tempo tunes and with a serious emphasis on melodies and hooks (having producer Cameron Webb on board was a fine choice). Vocalist Tim Fennelly is keeper even without a particularly distinguishable style -- it's smart of the band to deploy generous backing oohs and ahhs. I'm always a sucker for galloping beats and wish URETHANE would crank it just a little more, but if you're into early GOOD RIDDANCE, BROWN LOBSTER TANK, and SCHLEPROCK, this one's a lock to please.
