He was fairly certain they thought he was dead. After losing a few limbs and vital organs, he barely felt alive at times so he supposed they weren't wrong to think that. More importantly, being perceived as dead was actually advantageous when he was stumbling around with a busted mechanical leg, the barely lit streets of DEMA casting a dark blue on him, and a plain black beanie hastily shoved on to hide his canary hair.
He would have to shave that off soon, sadly: while the Bishops couldn't process yellow, brainwashed civilians could. Still, he frowned at the thought before nearly jumping at the sound of something that wasn't him.
“Are you okay?”
a lilting but firm voice questioned, their lean figure silhouetted in the comforting light from inside the apartment window. If he still had his heart, it would have threatened to climb up his throat and leave him wordless; instead, he coughed awkwardly and kept his volume low.
“Yeah, I'm uh fine. Sorry to bother you-”
He needed to get out of here, fast, in case they had seen his face on the news, so he turned away as he apologized before freezing as he was interrupted by the voice again, nervous but sweet laughter mixed in with their words.
“-Oh you're not bothering me, sweetie, I was just stress baking. I actually have way too many pastries, well I could eat them all myself but since you're here, would you like any?”
He… he knows that tone and can remember that scent of lovingly made food as if he had eaten it yesterday.
Oh. Oh god it's her it's HER.
Barely held back tears glistened in his dark eyes as he stared at the woman who had now stepped closer, a few strands of her blonde hair framing her cheekbones as she gave a slightly confused smile.
She wouldn't know him, she couldn't possibly know him, and if he came into her life now she would never get to stay here again. Their interaction would change everything; but maybe, just maybe together they could find the others.
He took in a shuddering breath, eyes closed as the chilling wind picked up. It seemed like only a few seconds, but when he opened his eyes she was right in front of him; a glimmer of something between concern and wonder in her gaze.
"Let's get you inside, you must be freezing."
