The father/son relationship is probably the most well-documented relationship in modern pop culture aside from the typical romance plotlines we see. There’s a lot of power there in the story of how a father and son try – or fail – to connect with each other. Cyclops #1 is a book that by all means should never have come into existence as it is. A time-traveling, teenage version of Scott Summers comes to the future and hangs out with his father turned space pirate, Corsair. That’s a bonkers premise and something that was highly unlikely before the launch of the Marvel NOW! initiative. But, here it is with an immediately exciting creative team working on it.
Putting Greg Rucka on this book was the best possible choice that could have been made. This is a gifted writer with a son near Scott’s age and that gives him an insight into the drama and dynamic between father and son that would be missing if another writer had been given the book. I love Matt Fraction but he doesn’t yet know what it’s like to be the parent to a teenager. A lot of writers would have played up the “father and son don’t understand each other” aspect but Rucka immediately divorces readers of that notion.
It’s clear that Scott and his father both have their reservations about the situation they’re in together but the two behave like normal people and don’t run away from it. For being a book set in space where a pirate is bonding with his mutant kid, this book has a strong humanity to it that’s missing in a lot of relationships in comic books. Heck, Greg Rucka should be strongly considered for a run on Fantastic Four based off of this issue. There are great moments that are definitely going to make readers smile like when Corsair gives his son a sword to complete his transformation into a young space pirate. It’s bound to remind readers of being handed a glove by their father before heading out to play catch.
Russell Dauterman is quite the acquisition for Marvel to make on this book. After a short but memorable stint on Nightwing over with the Distinguished Competition, this relatively new talent was the absolute right person to be given this new number one issue. From his opening Splashpage, which wonderfully recaps the All-New X-Men series this spun out of through reflections in Cyclops’ visor, Dauterman engages the reader with his unique visual style. His figures are delightfully expressive without necessarily being “cartoony” and there’s an easiness to them that recalls great actors on a stage rather the stiff poses some still struggle with. You know absolutely everything you need to know about the characters appearing in this book based on how the carry themselves and that is quite the accomplishment for an artist as new to readers as Dauterman.
In an era where it seems like so many books are dark and epic in scope, it feels refreshing to get a book dedicated to what is essentially a father and son road-trip. Sure, it’s in space as the hilarious credits page would like to remind you but that never feels like what’s important. This issue is an unqualified success and a sign that we’re in for something that, while it may not be the most “important” story ever told, it’s still going to be pretty damn memorable.
