It was a withered look,
like a flower left too long in a vase. Her smile sat faint on her lips, half sliding off beneath tired eyes. This was normal for her to seem a bit used up. Her mind always took the life right out of her. The blueberry darkness beneath her eyes glistened with slow evaporating moisture, the kiss of recent sorrow sealing the envelope she cased herself inside. I could never comprehend how such a pretty being could grow so distant, like a ghost's reflection on old film. She had her days, when the light would spark behind those pale eyes. You could see a glow on her cheeks, the tops of them dusted with rose against the porcelain underneath. Those were the days I lived to see in my child, but they were growing fewer as she aged. I wondered if this was what it is like, to truly fail as a parent... To be utterly useless in the saving of your offspring. I stared at her now, her waning attention, her empty eyes prompting the same question I always asked when I saw her begin to fade - Where is she disappearing to in there? - Alexios, 1/23/14 ; Matters of the Heart
