Cypress didn't usually hesitate in Nik's doorway, but he did today, looking more than a little lost, like he didn't know what to do or say. "Nik? Are...are you upset with me for something?"

Nik leaned against his brother, tipping his head so that it rested on Cy's shoulder, seeking out the reassurance he always needed when his mood tanked, and he started getting up in his head again about whether anyone really wanted him around or just told him they did out a sense of obligation.

“I swear, Nik. I’d never lie to you like that.”

He rested his head against his brother’s and snaked an arm around him, offering the kind of quiet comfort he knew worked best for him on days like this. Especially since Cy knew their mom was being overbearing again. 

“You know you’re my favorite person in this whole world.”

Cypress wasn't sure what the occasion was, but it seemed like Nik had managed to pull out all of the stops. The clothes fit like a glove, comfortable but easy to move in, his day collar glittering against the black and blue like stars in the night sky. The dinner had been incredible, far fancier than Cypress would have picked, but definitely worth it.

Nik's hand was warm in his and the clear night sky stretched above them, the bustle of the city drowned out for just a moment as Nik stole his entire focus.

"Okay, what are you up to, Nikolai? Why are we here?" he finally asked, the smile never once faltering as he looked the other over, clearly curious but still trusting him entirely.

"That's a pretty dumb question, Mase. I mean, come on, you know the answer to that is one."
