1990s Drum n Bass Playlist
OK, folks, here's the deal: if you claim to love drum n bass, but you're not familiar with a British guy by the name of Omni Trio, then you are simply doing it wrong. Omni was once a staple of powerhouse label Moving Shadow's roster, and now he currently kicks off this recently updated and chronologically ordered 90s dnb playlist of mine too, with his splendid "Who Are You?," a song from 1995 that's like riding a speedy glass elevator up into space; and when its warm, fat, n' gooey Korg M1 organ chords hit along with a string pad to underlie them, it's like you've made it past all of earth's atmospheric layers and are now looking down blissfully at the pale blue dot with the widest-angle lens possible. Korgan chords like these are usually reserved for classic house tunes from the late 80s to mid-90s (see: Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman"), but they work so well to enhance this dnb tune in particular here too. Such a beaut, and only with ~21.7K plays on Spotify, which feels pretty low for a track from a pioneering label that ended up proving so iconic.

And then in addition to that, we've got an update to the YouTube version of this playlist too, which contains a handful of tracks that can't be found on Spotify at all. Most of these adds are similarly atmospheric and come from a 1997 compilation called Science Fiction Jazz - Volume Two that was compiled by a Swiss guy named Minus 8; but then there's one more that comes from a different compilation that was issued that same year called Darque Fonque that I think maybe takes the cake for being the most remarkable of all within this YouTube bunch. "Djembe" is the debut track by a Brit who only once called himself Higher Dimension, and it seems to incorporate a djembe (a specific type of African hand-drum) into its production. Most dnb producers don't seem to really be in the habit of recording *their own drums* to build their beats, but this guy did it, and naturally, it really stands out from all the other quality adds that I made to this playlist for this week. Wait for this spacious tune to hit its five-minute mark, and I think you'll see what makes this tune so special. A total gem that's currently sitting at under 580 plays.

And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So with this update, we're now up to 15 songs that clock in at 96 minutes on Spotify, but over on YouTube, we're up to more than double that, with 36 songs that clock in at 236 minutes. So if you want a lot more 90s dnb nuggets, head on over to the YouTube one, because Spotify's recounting of this genre is pretty lacking, to say the least.
And here's some more dnb playlists that break this 90s one down into smaller segments by year:
