Mother. That was what she was to him. He worshiped the ground she walked on and, even then, he was worshiping the ground she would soon be walking on. Either way, it felt like she was some sort of replacement for the mother he had lost. Even though he still had one around, Efigenia felt like a missing piece for him. Her presence was always welcome in his life. When he found her in the house, he had a small box behind his back. “Efigenia. Lovely to see you.” He planted a kiss on her cheek and then placed the box in front of her. “A gift for you.” Within the box was a very hefty ring, but it was one he had seen and thought of her so he had to get it. It was nothing too extravagant, he thought. Well, it had been quite expensive actually, but he had gotten the price lowered with some illusion magic. None of them would ever know.

How did he describe his relationship with Efigenia? Vincenzo couldn’t really describe any of the friendships he had. They were all different in their own ways. Where one wouldn’t let him die, the other was the devil on his shoulder. Perhaps that was how he would describe it. The last time they had talked, she had spoken of his true intentions for being in Rome. He had spoken to August of the same, but their relationship was not the kind people wrote about in books. It was toxic in nature and would never be something anyone on the outside looking in would call a friendship. That was the point of it though, wasn’t it? Death would only come to those August cared for if the witch willed it so. Immortality would suit the other man. Efigenia though? Well, she could stomp on his chest with a singular heel and he would have thanked her for it out of fear. Thankfully, it seemed that they were in good standing for now. “You mentioned something last time. I came here for a reason, you were right on that. You must know something of ghouls, of what I can do now that I couldn’t before..”
