Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin in 2005. Modern Art is now exhibited here. But when I first came to Berlin in 1979, this building, a disused railway station, housed a train museum, with historic engines and coaches, and also model railway trains. Those exhibits can now be seen at the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin.

The ‘East Side’ cafe interior in 2005. This was next to Checkpoint Charlie, but I don’t think it was very successful. Perhaps people remembered what food was like in East Berlin in the DDR time, with watery cola and suspicious-looking sausages.
Looking through the pillars of the ‘Garden of Exile’ at the Jüdisches Museum Berlin. The pillars lean at an angle, with trees growing out of the tops, giving the visitor a feeling of dislocation, and of being removed from the real world where everyone else can live happily. A sad place, and a great work of art.
