characters: bailey fielding & logan date: december 2, 2020 summary: bailey and logan talk about the letter that she got from her biological mother.
Bailey slammed open the doors of the Iris cabin. "Logan! Love of my life! I brought some snacks, and I need to talk to you. Serious time."
Logan jumped, surprised by the slamming of the door all the way from her room. You'd think she'd know better by now. "In my room!" She yelled out to Bailey, pausing the YouTube video she was watching and sitting up.
Bailey went up to Logan's room, before jumping onto her bed next to her best friend. Bailey first put the snacks onto Logan's lap, followed by the ripped open letter on top of them. Bailey didn't have to say anything for Logan to know that she wanted her to read it and say what she thought about it.
Logan smiled at the snacks, then frowned at the letter. But, Bailey's silence was enough assumption that she was meant to read it. She read over the words once, twice, her face contorting into something of surprise and confusion. "Wait, wait, hold on. Did you just get this?"
“A few days ago, yeah,” Bailey replied with a nod of her head. “I didn’t really open it until yesterday though.”
"Oh my gods." Logan breathed out, still surprised, "Bailey that's—that's insane. What are you gonna do with it?"
“I kind of already called her?” Bailey replied, slowed and nervous about what her best friend would think about it.
"You what?!" Logan sat up, jostling the snacks in her lap, "Why didn't you start there! What the hell, what happened??"
“Start there? What am I supposed to say? Just casually bring up, ‘Oh hey Logan, by the way, the woman who left me when I was one year old sent me a letter and I called her with the phone number that was on there, want some gummy worms?’.” Bailey shrugged slightly. “I don’t even know how to process this all, dude. I called her and we talked, shortly. She invited me to Michigan to talk and get to know her, only if I wanted to of course.”
"Uh, yeah, that's exactly what you could've done!" Logan shook her head, still in disbelief, "She wants you to visit her? Do you want to?"
“Well I mentioned that I wanted to know more about, well, everything,” Bailey replied. She shrugged slightly at Logan’s question. “Is it weird that I kind of want to? Is it crazy?”
"No, of course not," Logan put a hand over hers, finally calming down a bit, "That's totally not crazy, like, it's something you've always wanted to know, y'know?"
“Yeah, but I’m basically going to travel all the way to Michigan to meet up with someone I barely know. Like yeah, I know she’s my biological mother, but that’s like asking to get murdered.” Bailey let out a groan, plopping back on Logan’s bed. She turned her head to look at her. “I kind of want to go though.”
Logan nodded thoughtfully at the murder comment, "That's unfortch probs true." She turned and laid on her side to face Bailey, the snacks sliding off her lap, "I mean...if you want to go...?" She pondered, "I think you should see if you can find a way." She reached for the bag of Skittles and ripped open the corner with her teeth. "Maybe talk to Chiron or something? I bet he'd know something."
Bailey turned on her side too, facing more toward Logan now. "What if she meets me and she doesn't want me? What if she has a whole different family, and she could be a mom to them, but never wanted to be my mom? What if she regrets even speaking to me again in the first place? What if I'm not the girl she thought I would be? What if..." Bailey scrunched her face up. She could say a billion more, but instead her eyes watered. "What if I'm not good enough?"
"Bailey," Logan shook her head, reaching out and grabbing her friend's hand, "If she thought she'd regret it, she probably wouldn't have sent you that letter at all, right? Like, this stuff happens for like, so many reasons, you know?" She wished she had more to say or that she could put it in better words, "How are you gonna know if you don't try? And besides—if she even tries to say you're not good I'll march over there and fight her myself."
Bailey smiled slightly, grateful for having Logan as such a great friend. "So you think I should give her a chance?" she asked. "I should go see her?"
“I mean...” Logan scrunched her nose, weighing the pros and cons, “I think there’s nothing wrong with taking the chance? Just—“ She sat up a little, “You gotta be safe, for realsies, the last thing I need is to hear you got your ear bitten off by a monster or something.”
“I know, don’t worry, I’ll have my ax with me, and maybe I can borrow Elias’ bow and arrow bracelets too. I’ll talk to him about it,” Bailey replied. “I’ve been basically training to kill monsters since I was seven, I probably know that more than I know simple addition. Which if you think about it, is kind of sad.”
Logan nodded because, well, that’s very true. “When would you leave? Did she give you like, a specific date or anything?”
Bailey shook her head, “I told her that I would think about it and get back to her. I honestly wanted to talk to you first. Just to make sure I wasn’t crazy.”
“You’re definitely not crazy.” Logan shook her head, taking a large bite out of a Twizzler, “Of all the stuff we hear about around here, honestly this sounds like, far more normal.”
Bailey nodded, “That’s very true, honestly,” she responded, pulling off a twizzler for herself. “What did I do to deserve you?”
"What did I do to deserve YOU, girl." Logan grinned, nudging her friend's arm, "Everything will work out."
Bailey leaned into her best friend. "I love you," she said. "I really hope it does."
