Rook has to be their companions' therapist, because they don't have Cole.
DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION (2014) — developed by bioware.
vivienne being so deeply tied to spirits despite her obvious fear of them is so fascinating to me. there are a few reasons why i think vivienne personally chose to become a knight enchanter- the respect that comes with the title, the physical aspect of fighting with a blade, and the freedom that comes with being a battle mage being just a few- but i also think vivienne chosing a specialization that puts her in constant direct contact with spirits was an intentional way for her to try and get over that fear. vivienne is firm in her stance that the worst thing a mage can be is uninformed. the biggest danger is ignorance. learning how to interact with spirits in a way that ensures she remains in control would play right into this.
but... it doesn't work. she's still uncomfortable around spirits. fearful. she expresses disgust/unease at the idea of the spirits "touching" her when she uses her magic and being called their maker. she compares spirits vying for her attention to courtiers who, unwanted, press for her attention. vivienne weilds a (willing!) spirit in her knight-enchanter blade and spirits aid in her healing and still, none of them are to be trusted. all spirits are dangerous, even the ones who seem kind or harmless. especially them. especially ones like cole.
which is why it is such a big deal for her that she cares for him still. cole is one of the MOST threatening beings vivienne has likely ever come across; the ghost of the spire, a mage-killer, a spirit who can pry into her mind and pick apart the worst of her fears and traumas. she cannot defend against him, and cole presses again and again at her. and she still can't stop herself from caring about him! from worrying! and not only does the realization shift her dynamic with cole but there is so much potential there too for how it changes how she views all spirits. there is room there for her to move past her fear through compassion rather than the cold control she had weilded before.
Cole isn’t in Veilguard because he would have forced everyone to sit and talk and that would fix everything too quickly.
"it doesn't matter that they won't remember me. what matters is I helped."
the ghost of the spire.
