I never thought I would know my father. My mother is where it begins. My mother and I never had a good relationship. I never felt at home, sure I had a small apartment to live in, being born and raised in New York but it wasn't a home. It only got worse as a teenager, young, confused and full of questions she refused to answer. I knew something was missing, I had a feeling someone was missing in my life.
At 16 years old, I found out about my father, who he was, not just a mention of him over the years of my childhood but a name attached to a photo of him. But no clue where he could have been by the time I was 16.
At 18, when I graduated highschool I followed his footsteps & went into the army as a combat medic, honorably discharged after 6 years.
At 24, when I returned I moved to Pittsburgh to start my residency at UPMC Presbyterian. That same year I found and met my father. A new start, a new life.
At 30, I have a career as a doctor, daughter to @nightshiftsarge , niece to @juliabunnyabbot , cousin to my Lily-bug , and my advocate work. I wouldn't change a thing.
When I first met my dad he told me he would move heaven and earth for me. He's been there with me and for me ever since and I couldn't be more grateful for him.
Thank you, @nightshiftsarge, for being my dad and being my home.
