Betty 89 (3/5) Betty the dare-devil monkey: “I wish I’d been older when the war came, because all I wanted was to be a Despatch Driver. That was my ambition – to ride a motorbike in the war. I was a dare devil you see, anything risky I loved. Nobody could dare me to do something, because they knew I’d do it. At school my favourite subject was PE. I was very active. Actually, I was a right monkey. Mind, in one class I was always good and was careful who I sat next to, because we had a teacher and she used to spit, so you didn’t want to be up the front or you’d get showered! My mother always used to know if I’d been naughty at school. She knew by the expression on my face. ‘Now what have you done today?’ My sister never did anything wrong. Once, when she was in bed I stuck pips in her ear and she had to go to hospital to have them poked out. I was terrible! But the more they stopped me, the more I did it.”

Betty 89 (2/5) Betty remembers her parents: “We were happy because our parents were happy. Coming home from school one day, I’d spilt a whole bottle of green ink over my maroon gym slip. But instead of mum taking it off me, she cleaned it on the buffet with me still in it. She turned to me father and she says, ‘Father, speak to her!’ And he says, ‘Good afternoon Betty.’ Everybody burst out laughing and that was it, all over. That was my father. During the war, we had a little evacuee from London. Bless him, he was lovely. But he wet the bed. Well, my mum will fight anything like that. She got him sorted within a few weeks, just by giving him love. That’s all she gave him. Love. He stayed with us almost until the war was over. I wish I could remember his name.”
