Top 5 Favorite Ultraman (1966) Monsters
Since I’ve just finished the original Ultraman series, I figured I might make a little list of my favorite monsters to close things off nice and proper! (I’ll probably do this for the other ultra series as well)
5. Pigmon: I’ll admit I didn’t care much for Pigmon in his first appearance ; but I loved seeing him again in the toy shop! It’s fun seeing a smaller monster and he’s a nice contrast to all his “evil” counterparts.
4. Seabozu: A.k.a the monster that broke my heart. He’s so sweet (and I am positively salty about Ultraman still fighting him when he wasn’t even fighting back)! His episode is definitely one of my favorite.
3. Gyango: He’s like a more colorful and more gremlin-esque Gabara. His rotating ears were cute, his bastard attitude was super entertaining... And I might be wrong, but his fight (probably my favorite fight actually) felt like one of the first where Ultraman actually showed some personnality (trying to get Gyango to attack first, tapping his shoulder to get him to turn around, etc).
2. Baltan: Cicada-crab-squid!!! His design may be really hard to draw but I am IN LOVE with it! the swiveling eyes are a really cool element and I love the arrays of different abilities! I’m not a fan of the elongated Baltans from episode 16 ; but the og big boy is great!
1. Dada: What a surprise ; as if the description and banner of this blog weren’t indication enough... First of all, a dadaism-inspired kaiju? Yes please! The stripes, the lipstick, the haircut... If that’s not one of the most unique kaiju out there then I don’t know what is! Tsubaraya is also clearly having a lot of fun with their own character, seeing as they’ve used Dada as a love interest for Ultraman in commercials before. All in all, I really love this stripey seijin and I’m so glad they come back in later series! Looking forward to the next encounter!
Dada
“Planet Seijin-966: a cultural hub where many species of aliens and seijins live together peacefully- and a prime target for human invasion. In order to protect the peace of its inhabitants a group of elite fighters and scientists was assembled, known as the Monster Task Force. Led by Captain Zetton, the MTF has made it its mission to guard Seijin-966 against human attacks, the Science Patrol and of course, the dreaded Ultraman...”
Well, there it is! I love AUs that switch the protagonists and antagonists around so with how much I enjoyed the series, it was only natural for me to give Ultraman the same treatment!
I was supposed to draw a lot more stuff to go along with this ; but this piece took way longer than expected (tho I’m very, very proud of the result) and I don’t think I’ll have the patience to finish everything in one batch ; so here goes! I’ll definitely post more later on to build on top of this first idea ; but in the mean time if anyone is interested in the concept and has questions (main character backstories, minor character roles/jobs, etc..) I’d be more than happy to answer asks!
It’s... He.
