There was nothing that could have prepared you for parenthood. There’s no way to explain it but it’s true. You’ve experienced jet-lag, you’ve gone days without sleeping, but this was something entirely different. The first night with your baby—named Rashida as a silent thank you to whatever higher being guided you and Rami together— she cried every five minutes. Rami panicked and ran around you as you fed and burped your new bundle, a small smile plaguing your tired face whenever he scolded you for being so calm. He was still up reading what you were sure was his hundredth mommy blog and highlighting things in parenting books by the time you finally got Rashida to sleep. It was almost 5 in the morning.
After the first month, you were both exhausted but learning to get the hang of things. Rami was more comfortable with staying alone with Rashida while you ran out to run errands and fought you whenever you tried to reach for her. It was quite adorable actually, just how small she looked in his arms as he rocked her and whispered softly in Arabic. She had his eyes and his crooked smile. You were sure she was bound to have his charm. You warned Rami he would have to scare teenage boys away when the time was right and you laughed at the panicked expression that took over his joy.
At six months, there was a strong pattern that works for the both of you but you mentally prepared to break it. It was time for Rami to return back to work and if the stress on that wasn’t high enough, there’s always the fact that you argued over whether moving was good idea or not. It’s not that you didn’t want to, you just didn’t think it’s a good idea to bounce your newborn from state to state. He hated that he agreed with you but still begged you to consider it when he wrapped his arms around you in bed.
He left after seven months, when things really started to come together. You Facetimed every second of every minute you were apart and tried to coax words out of Rashida’s tiny lips. She started to crawl everywhere and that made Rami happier than you’d ever seen him. You wished you weren’t apart and promised to visit him soon.
She was already eight months by the time you got back to him. She had teeth Rami wouldn’t shut up about the entire ride back to his apartment and you watched in utter awe because this is it, this is that crazy, stupid, undeniable thing people call love. How something so simple as watching your two favorite people interact could bring you close to tears was beyond you. You loved the way Rashida laughed whenever Rami peppered her with kisses and squealed when he called her “habibti”. She was already so bright and beautiful and Rami was exactly how you imagined—an excellent and dedicated father. You wondered how you got so lucky.
He bought Rashida little boots that matched his own and dresses in every color he could get his hands on. His room was full of toys and books that she wasn’t quite old enough to play with yet.
Sami stopped by to visit and somehow managed to convince you both to go out and eat. You both weren’t into date nights outside of your home, if anything, you’re used to curling up on the couch and binge watching movies or listening to music until you both crash. That’s how most of your date nights went. Sami insisted you needed this and you’re both not willing to argue. A night out would do you some good.
You get dolled up for the first time in months and remember the joys of clean clothes and makeup. Rami couldn’t keep his hands off you as you walked around the city in silence and took in all of the sights. He kissed the back of your hand and you wrapped your arms around his middle to rest your head against his shoulder.
“I love you.”
Rami stopped in the middle of the street to look down at you and smile. It was big and bright and it looked like it hurt but you loved it because it was meant only for you.
“I love you more.”
Somehow after kissing in the middle of the street for all of the residents of Brooklyn to see, you made it to a dimly lit restaurant and spent hours catching up and eating the best meals you’ve had in months. Every now and again, you’d both let your hands dart for your phones to check for any sudden chaos before setting them down with sighs and grinning at each other.
“Surprised Sami hasn’t burned the whole place down?” You asked over your glass of wine.
“Please, I expect to come back to him in tears and covered in crap with Rashida sitting in a corner giggling after reeking havoc on her poor uncle.”
“This is nice though. I can’t remember the last time I saw you in clothes that weren’t covered in food. Or heard you speak something other than your pseudo-Arabic-baby talk.”
“I still miss the little devil.” He admitted. He grew sheepish and your heart swelled. Even after half a year, you couldn’t get over how much he loved your daughter. It was pure and never-ending. “Come on, let’s enjoy the little bit of freedom we have.”
You went from dinner to some bar in the darker part of town that was filled to the brim with people and pulsated with music. You knocked back a few drinks and laughed at how unreal it felt to be out and about again before you danced and groped at each other in a dark corner. There were scattered kisses and hands that explored and lingered without thinking. It was like the beginning all over again and it felt good to know you could always go back to that.
You stumbled home after midnight. It was the latest you’d been out since Rashida was born but you didn’t feel any hints of exhaustion when you toppled through the door and giggled at Sami’s sleeping body, spread out against the couch in all his glory with Rashida sleeping on his chest. You let Rami carefully pry them apart and drape a blanket over his brother before taking your daughter into his room and waking her slowly. Usually, you’d object, but they’d been apart for so long, you all have, so you didn’t really care about sleep training that night. It could wait.
Rami carried her around the room and bounced her merrily in his arms, tickling her tiny tummy and blowing raspberries against her chubby cheeks and arms. You watched him brush her hair while he told her about your night out and repeated how much he loved her. The smile he’d worn all night grew bigger and brighter than ever every time Rashida giggled or clapped at the sound of his voice.
“Did you tire out your ‘amm Sami, huh? You sure did, habibti! Jayyid!”
“Rami, don’t encourage her to ruin Sami’s life.” You laughed as you climbed under his covers and watched him through tired eyes. There were coos and gurgles from Rashida before she turned to look at you and reached out. “Ommee missed you baby girl.” You whispered as Rami set her in your arms and kissed the top of her head.
Rami continued to coo and tickle and speak with as many extra syllables as possible. You let sleep overtake you. You may have been happy to be next to your two favorite people on Earth but you were still a mother and one who had taken care of your precious gem alone for the past month. A part of you wanted to push Rami off when he started to shake you awake but you groaned instead and forced your eyes open.
“Don’t tell me you let her hit Sami—”
“Shh. Listen.”
You strained your ears to focus on Rashida’s baby babble until you heard her whisper ‘ommee’ and ‘mama’ and your heart shot right into your throat. It’s not perfect but she’s your little girl so it is. It’s music to your ears as you rested your forehead against hers and beamed up at Rami when he wrapped his arms around you both. She was still so young but already showing so much promise and you only had each other to thank.
You’d pay for ruining her sleep schedule or for letting her roam-free with her uncle while you were away but none of that mattered. The only thing that mattered was how perfect she felt against you and the way Rami never once stopped smiling or praising the both of you.
