Razor X Productions: Killing Sound (2006)

It’s one of the illest things Richard D. James’ Rephlex label ever released and it took Omega WUSB assembling a best-of Justin Broadrick & Kevin Martin broadcast to find it. It’s criminal how it took us so long, so guilty as charged.

The Bug / Kevin Martin’s penchant for collaborations went full-scale when he teamed with John Bulloten (The Rootsman) and enlisted a whole roster of reggae artists for an all-out breakcore / dancehall shootout. It’s about the period when both Broadrick and Martin moved away from jungle and this could’ve been the latter’s final hurrah of it, but make no mistake that The Bug himself went for maximum damage. Envision his collaboration with The Soundmurderer during their 2003 John Peel Session but clacked with heavy-hitting industrial-grade breaks, dubs, and ragga shouts to the hilt. Warrior Queen, Daddy Freddy, and Cutty Ranks spit some top game during the double LP’s fast-paced rag-tag, but the real delight is “Molestor” featuring Mexican. I have never heard anything sprout so high and none more catchy with vocals that matched perfectly with the rhythm. 

Chances are Killing Sound has been vastly overlooked and almost never mentioned, but impeccable releases like these make themselves undiscovered diamonds in the rough for it. Find it and look 15 years into the future when Martin’s motifs of collaborations and dub / dancehall culture are still thriving to highly commendable reviews.

Soundmurderer & SK-1 Rewind Records (2003)

It’s still a huge criminal offense that The Bug & Soundmurderer’s outing on John Peel has yet to see a physical release. It’s a Peel session for fuck’s sake and many of them had their proper day on the shelves. At least we have Soundmurderer and SK-1 at the top of the jungle game. Classic dancehall vocal tropes, call-outs, shouts, and certainly running the gamut of using the best effects and drum patterns at the time in a grab-all take-all assault that never took a breather. Here’s another idea: 2003 saw jungle rocket off and more people took notice. Richard D. James / Aphex Twin remixed The Bug & Daddy Freddy’s “Run The Place Red” and released drum 'n bass records on the regular, making it the new major go-to. Where Rewind Records is placed, of course this one’s a given.
