You are clever -pats head-
Lyla has died.
The words echo in his head like the bells of a distant church: Lyla has died. And he can’t quite believe them and yet he knows they are probably true because who could ever be so cruel? Who could ever be stupid enough to face his rage if those words were a lie?
He sits down slowly, with a blank expression before nodding. “How?” Is the first word that leaves his lips and really, he doesn’t want to know, there’s no need for him to know. It doesn’t matter, she is gone now. “Don’t tell me.” He then says, raising a hand to stop the other from speaking. “Leave.” And he waits for the other to get out before closing his eyes and bury his face on his hands.
He feels tired and numb, still processing the news. He doesn’t let emotions hit him just yet because there is still so much to do. He has to inform Loki and Tony, he has to inform the rest of the kids, he has to inform the Marks and Dummy. He has to recognize the body and plan a funeral.
So Jarvis takes a deep breath and doesn’t let sadness hit him, he doesn’t crumble down, he doesn’t cry, he doesn’t feel. Because his family need him and he can’t afford himself to mourn for the lost of the girl he had watched row up into an amazing woman. He can’t allow himself to remember the little girl reading and burning things with unintentional magic, making him laugh. He can’t allow himself to remember comforting that same little girl when she woke up screaming from nightmares. He can’t remember hugging a teenager filled with fears, he can’t remember watching her as an adult and feel pride. He can’t because it will hurt so much. It’ll break him in ways that he isn’t certain he can’t repair.
Lyla has died. Lyla is gone. Lyla is dead. Lyla passed away. He always say it different to every member of the family and he hugs them as they cry, receives the punches and listen to their screams: No, it’s a lie. You’re a liar. I hate you. He watches as objects get broken or burned, he watches a tears fall and anger arises. He watches calmly, he comforts the best he can. He does his job and assures he’ll take care of everything.
And once everything is taken care off, once everyone is informed and comforted, once the days pass and the loss slowly stops hurting the rest, Jarvis locks himself up and finally lets everything hit him. It’s devastating, like fire burning him, like ice freezing him, like a monster eating him up. And after he is done crying and destroying his room, Jarvis laughs. He laughs because he remembers Lyla having fun by burning buildings and the echo of that memory, of her laugh…that’s enough to make things better. Even for a little while.
