He always criedat the death of animals, no matter how many times Vladimir told him that this is how it is. Ever since his firstday on the front lawn after weeks inside, waiting for confirmation thatEzreal's parents had, indeed, returned to Piltover without him, he cried.
That afternoonhad been warm, but the promise of winter was in the air and Vladimir followedon languid feet as his adopted son ran across the grass with arms wide open.Crimson eyes watched as Ezreal crept up on a swallow, reaching out with bothhands to snatch it from where it sat. A flick of his wrist and the child screamed and fell back, inconsolable even after his mentor had returned all the blood to the stunnedcreature.
"They'rejust animals," Vladimir had said once, shaking his head, though it had come out more like a question, "it doesn't matter ifthey die." Ezreal, blubbering and whining, had shook his head, stillclutching the exsanguinated squirrel in his arms.
It had startedsimple, with a light pinprick of blood on his fingertip that would lift anddance, first at Vladimir's coaxing and then his student's, but Ezreal'ssensitivity prevented the blond from progressing any further than that. Wide eyes would marvel at the droplets of shivering sanguine, but death was something else entirely.
Theleaves were changing colour when, drawn by a high-pitched scream, Vladimirfound the boy crouched in the dirt again, staring at the dead body of a mole.Brows were pinched, and after a moment crisp blue eyes turn towards his father.Shuffling in his squat, Ezreal turned to show his father what he'd caught -- inhis hand, hovering barely an inch above his palm, a handful of blood, onlybarely kept in place by a child's fickle concentration.
Ezreal opens hismouth to speak, but before he can get out the words 'I did it,' the bloodfalls, staining his hands and slipping between his fingers. Ezreal screams atthe top of his lungs.
