Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 21:6

Jesus said, “All that you see here - the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” Jesus and the Temple (CCC Par 585) On the threshold of his Passion Jesus announced the coming destruction of this splendid building, of which there would not remain "one stone upon another". By doing so, he announced a sign of the last days, which were to begin with his own Passover. But this prophecy would be distorted in its telling by false witnesses during his interrogation at the high priest's house, and would be thrown back at him as an insult when he was nailed to the cross.

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 19:43

".. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides..." Jesus and the Temple (CCC Par 586) Far from having been hostile to the Temple, where he gave the essential part of his teaching, Jesus was willing to pay the Temple-tax, associating with him Peter, whom he had just made the foundation of his future Church. He even identified himself with the Temple by presenting himself as God's definitive dwelling-place among men. Therefore his being put to bodily death presaged the destruction of the Temple, which would manifest the dawning of a new age in the history of salvation: "The hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father."

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 17:10

"We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do." BEAR WITNESS TO THE TRUTH (CCC Par 2472) The duty of Christians to take part in the life of the Church impels them to act as witnesses of the Gospel and of the obligations that flow from it. This witness is a transmission of the faith in words and deeds. Witness is an act of justice that establishes the truth or makes it known. All Christians by the example of their lives and the witness of their word, wherever they live, have an obligation to manifest the new man which they have put on in Baptism and to reveal the power of the Holy Spirit by whom they were strengthened at Confirmation.

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 17:21

Jesus said in reply, "The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, Look, here it is', or, 'There it is. 'For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you." Jesus teaches us how to pray (CCC Par 2612) In Jesus "the Kingdom of God is at hand." He calls his hearers to conversion and faith, but also to watchfulness. In prayer the disciple keeps watch, attentive to Him Who Is and Him Who Comes, in memory of his first coming in the lowliness of the flesh, and in the hope of his second coming in glory. In communion with their Master, the disciples' prayer is a battle; only by keeping watch in prayer can one avoid falling into temptation.

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 14:33

"In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple." Faith (CCC Par 1816) The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it: "All however must be prepared to confess Christ before men and to follow him along the way of the Cross, amidst the persecutions which the Church never lacks." Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for salvation: "So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven."

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 16:2

He summoned him and said, "What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward." COMMUNION IN SPIRITUAL GOODS (CCC Par 952) "They had everything in common." "Everything the true Christian has is to be regarded as a good possessed in common with everyone else. All Christians should be ready and eager to come to the help of the needy . . . and of their neighbors in want." A Christian is a steward of the Lord's goods.

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 13:15

The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites!.." LIVING IN THE TRUTH (CCC Pars 2465/2468) The Old Testament attests that God is the source of all truth. His Word is truth. His Law is truth. His "faithfulness endures to all generations." Since God is "true," the members of his people are called to live in the truth. Truth as uprightness in human action and speech is called truthfulness, sincerity, or candor. Truth or truthfulness is the virtue which consists in showing oneself true in deeds and truthful in words, and in guarding against duplicity, dissimulation, and hypocrisy.

Catechism A Day: Gospel Verse Lk 10:13

Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” The reality of sin (CCC Par 386) Sin is present in human history; any attempt to ignore it or to give this dark reality other names would be futile. To try to understand what sin is, one must first recognize the profound relation of man to God, for only in this relationship is the evil of sin unmasked in its true identity as humanity's rejection of God and opposition to him, even as it continues to weigh heavy on human life and history.
