Promises pt. 6
She continued to shout at it, scream at it, missing completely when her name had fallen from its lips as it lowered its weapon and slid back in the sand. She got up, and as she felt the Force swirl around her as she approached it, its hands rose up and, slowly, pulled down the cloth wound around its face.
Her heart stopped.
Ben.
They stood there, just stood there, unable to look away. Taking each other in. Drinking each other in, as the sun faded behind them. Rey’s mouth hung open as she took a step back, hand coming up to cover the gaping she couldn’t help. As dusk began to die, he couldn’t see the tears that had gathered in her eyes.
Finally, he shifted.
“Come inside.” That familiar voice. His eyes didn’t leave hers.
Rey didn’t know what else to do- looking up at the darkening sky, it was too risky to make her way back. She nodded as the evening wind blew through the fabric covering them both, and with deliberate movements, set off for the inside of her- no, his- AT-AT.
So she went inside.
The place had changed, little pieces of him here and there- Ben, Ben, BEN, her mind kept screaming- but at the same time…a small doll, familiar cutlery…how did so much of her manage to remain there? She looked on with shock.
Stooped over a heat source at the far end, he ripped open the familiar packaging and mixed it with water; the stale, childhood aroma wafted towards her. When she finally came back to herself, he was standing there looking at her, and she knew he saw it, too- the strange intersecting of two lifetimes spliced together in this symbolic juxtaposition that is her former home. He approached her, and she knew she could no longer hide her tears from the light of his lantern inside.
He closed his eyes briefly, a slight, sapient nod. “I know,” he said quietly, reaching for the hem of her poncho-esque cover. “Come on…” he encouraged softly, and moved to lift it over her head.
She let him, mind too ensnared with the scene. Never would she have imagined he’d come here. Never would she have imagined he’d live as she once had…
He held her cover carefully in his hands, as if it were worth thousands of credits more than the two she had paid for it, and folded it with seeming reverence before placing it on a shelf next to the few other articles of clothing he owned.
He went back to the portable stove. “Come,” he said, motioning with his head for her to sit.
