The 5 Petitioners Who Challenged Ban On Homosexuality
New Delhi: The Top Court of India has decriminalized homosexuality in India. The verdict was pronounced today, on the petitions challenging the colonial-era Section 377 that criminalises consensual gay sex. The Supreme Court had earlier, criminalized gay sex in 2013 by cancelling a Delhi high court order, saying it was up to parliament to take a call on scrapping laws. In 2016, five celebrities, petitioned against the Supreme Court to reconsider its own ruling.
1. The 59 year old renowned classical dancer and winner of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Navtej Singh Johar, who had petitioned the Supreme Court along with his partner. They said that Section 377 violated the right to life and personal liberty guaranteed by the constitution. He is a visiting faculty at the Ashoka University.
2. The 63 year old Sunil Mehra, a journalist and the former editor of the Indian edition of Maxim magazine. Mr Mehra is also an actor and exponent of dastangoi, a 13th century form of storytelling. The 63 year old has directed, produced, written and anchored 'Centrestage' on Doordarshan. He has co-founded Studio Abhyas, along with Navtej Singh Johar, his partner of over two decades.

3. The 45 year old Ritu Dalmia, a celebrity chef and owner of Diva, the niche restaurant chain. A several books have been written by her and also hosted food shows on television. Ritu Dalmia was born in Kolkata to a Marwari business family and joined her family business at teenage. She has written many cookbooks and her Travelling Diva: Recipes from around the World became a bestseller in 2012.
4. The owner of the Neemrana chain of hotels, Aman Nath, 61. A history and architecture enthusiast, Mr Nath has written several books on it. The 61 year old's work was the first Indian book chosen by Christie's for worldwide distribution.
5. The youngest of the lot, 23 year old Ayesh Kapur, is an actor and a businesswoman, who is best known for her performance in Black, where she played young Rani Mukherjee. 9 year old Ms Kapur won many accolades for her portrayal of a deaf and mute girl. She had won the Best Supporting Actress award for the role. Ms Kapur is a Liberal Arts student at Columbia University and helps her mother in her line is accessories.
