A Suspended Mystery in the March Sky 🌬️🏢
"During my walk on March 18th, I looked up and discovered this fascinating treasure of the Montreal winter. 🧐 Do you know exactly what it is?
It's a bald-faced hornet's nest 🐝 (Dolichovespula maculata). It's a true feat of natural engineering: these insects create this grey 'paper' themselves by chewing wood fibers to protect their colony. 🏗️📜
Today, on the cusp of spring, this nest is completely empty and silent. ❄️ The colony completed its cycle with the first frosts, leaving behind this fragile yet surprisingly sturdy structure that weathered all our winter snow and freezing rain. 🌨️✨ A beautiful testament to nature's resilience, just before the leaves grow back to hide it once again. 🌿💖
