daisy didn't love gatsby when they meet again, she just loved the idea of something that wasn't tom.

that being said, i do think they could've been happy together if the stars aligned.

and yknow what i'll die on this hill. gatsby was a childish love, the type of love you admit to after a few minutes, because you don't know the true depth of what love is.

she's a young white-passing woman of colour married to a racist pig, who's been trapped not only by the money and threat of having nothing, but a child she has no true deep connection to and only really knowing tom (and jordan) after the move from chicago to new york. further away from her family, further away from anyone she ever called friend.

her flippant nature is one way of looking at it, but really - it's self preservation. putting a front on to fit in so that she could remain at the level of society she's at - not because she really adores it there (she sort of does), but because she's terrified of having nothing.

gatsby, like tom, wants possession of her, wants to put her in a gilded tower.. and she finds relief in that for a time because he's not brutal, he blinds her with glitz and joy and excitement, but really.. would things be different if she went with him? really?

if she hadn't ran over myrtle, if she'd gotten away with jay, i think they could've and would've been happy, but i think it'd have been her who would be yearning for something new not long after. she never got to explore the world really before being locked down, and this would be no different.
