Back when episode 9 of @doyoucopypod came out, my boyfriend asked me what the significance of Frederick picking out Marshall's sweater was, because we were planning our Dakota and Marshall cosplays for MCM London.

I said there wasn't any one particular big thing behind the sweater specifically, but more that it's just Dakota's turning point in the series, and the moment where her grief starts to be portrayed differently, and more true to what he's actually like.

Up until this point, he had been cold (no pun intended) and dismissive, keeping everyone at arms length after Marshall was killed and Blake sided with Blair. She doesn't really have anyone after that, and so her grief shows itself as isolation.

But then in episode nine, she's given Frederick to look after, and the two of them click very quickly. Dakota now has someone more her speed, who hasn't betrayed him yet, who has experiences and feelings in common with her. Frederick reminds Dakota of Marshall, and then seeing them in Marshall's sweater is kind of Dakota's turning point, where she gets attached to Frederick.

Dakota is very affectionate and loyal-to-a-fault to those she cares about. We see as much in episode 11 when it's revealed that his missing fingers are due to him trying to look after Blake when they were in the mountains together and she had to drag him through the snow, lend him their gloves, being left behind while Blake was rescued, etc.

That all disappears when Marshall is killed and she not only loses them, but sort of loses Blake, too, as she's busy being consumed by grief, he's busy defending Blair, and Dakota in turn shuts himself out and loses connection with her best friend in that process. In episode 11 it's clear that he carries a lot of feelings of betrayal for all the work she's had to do.

But then Freddie comes along and is nice to him, and episode 9 is the moment where we start to see a more true-to-himself version of Dakota, affectionate, excessively forgiving, and easily attached.
