This is Minnesota. This is how our "diverse and progressive" city deals with its original people. I'm not surprised. That ended years ago as a child discovering the inherently anti-Indigenous actions of non-Native Minnesotans. I'm just exhausted. Exhausted watching Indigenous pain be co-opted for their gain and profit.

Following colonial encroachment into the Minnesota River Valley [and also Lake Minnetonka], Indigenous people were forcibly relocated to a prison-like setting at Fort Snelling [just south of Minneapolis]. Understandably, this violent expulsion was met with retaliation. In a terror-inducing revenge, the US military rounded up 38 Dakota men — many of whom spiritual leaders, to be hung despite there being any evidence that these men were involved in any “crimes”. This heinous act is remembered by those who ride their horses to the site in honor of the 38 innocent people who were killed. It’s the site where the Dakota War of 1862 started after the United States did not honor the Mendota Treaty. That treaty established more than 100 acres near Morton, Minnesota as the Lower Sioux Agency. “Today is definitely a historic event,” said Grace Goldtooth-Campos. It was an emotional and historic day for relatives of the Indigenous people who were forced off their land. After generations of being separated from ancestral land, the Minnesota Historical Society gave it back to the Lower Sioux Indian Community. “And although this is a joyous occasion we cannot forget the history of these lands and the connection to broken promises unfulfilled treaties obligations and the events that led to the loss of the Dakota 38 plus two, “ said Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. This land is the site of where the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 started, a war that led to the largest single-day mass execution in our country’s history. Thirty-eight Dakota men were hung in Mankato, for defending their people. It is the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The hanging of 38 Dakota came at the culmination of the Dakota War, which started because of a treaty broken by Congress. The Dakota people were being starved to death. “Let then eat grass or their own dung,” Andrew Myrick, a trader & store owner who withheld their rations. Andrew Myrick was among the first to die. He was found with grass in his mouth. The accused were subjected to sham trials held in English (a language foreign to them), and they had no legal representation. They were also not allowed to discuss the broken treaty, or treaty law. Many were innocent. They were hanged anyway, on a custom made scaffold, in front of a cheering mob. Dakota women & children were forced to watch the hanging. One Dakota infant was reportedly snatched from the arms of a mother and killed on sight. Around 1,700 Dakota, mostly women and children, were held as prisoners at Fort Snelling. Disease & death were rampant. Chief Little Crow, a leader during the Dakota War, was later assassinated. His remains were mutilated by townspeople & displayed. They stuffed firecrackers in his nose & ears and lit them. Local doctors eventually took his body parts to study. Two more Dakota leaders, Shakopee (Little Six) and Medicine Bottle, were later captured and executed. After the hanging of the Dakota 38, the Dakota people were exiled from their stolen homelands in Minnesota. The governor put a bounty on their scalps. The Dakota people were separated and sent to prison camps in other states where the women were raped by soldiers." Today was the largest mass execution by the hands of the US.
