About the Author

John Walsh is an award winning filmmaker with a focus on social justice. His work ranges from television series to feature films. He is a double BAFTA and double Grierson Awards nominee for his groundbreaking work. John’s 1989 documentary on Ray Harryhausen (Movement Into Life) is held in the Ray and Diana Foundation‘s archive. John also produced HD audio and film commentary recordings with Ray in his final years.

Dr. Who & The Daleks: The Official Story of the Films is a title that I have eagerly looked forward to since it was announced. Filmmaker and author John Walsh has the golden touch (or pen) when writing definitive guides on classic cult cinema. He’s done it thrice over with his tomes, Harryhausen: The Lost Movies (2019), Flash Gordon: The Official Story of the Film (2020), and Escape From New York: The Official Story of the Film (2021), all for Titan Books. To say my expectations were high would be an understatement. Consumers and reviewers highly regarded all three previous titles, and all were nominated for Rondo Hatton Classic Horror awards!

Luckily Dr. Who & The Daleks: The Official Story of the Films lives up to Walsh’s previous titles and my lofty expectations! John takes control of TARDIS and drops us effortlessly back to the swinging sixties, where Dalekmania was running wild, culminating in the two 1960s Doctor Who film adaptations, Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. John does an admirable job of painting a vivid picture of the making of these two films, drawn from lots of archive material, interviews, unseen artwork, and gloriously restored and colourised photos by Clayton Hickman. The book examines the complete production process for both films, including production, design, casting, and distribution, all accompanied by a cornucopia of illustrations, behind-the-scenes photos, posters, and props that I’ve never seen before. The overseas promotional campaigns are always fascinating, as Doctor Who had yet to become the worldwide phenomenon it is today.

This book is a must-purchase. Whether you are a fan of Doctor Who or just cinema, John Walsh has done a magnificent job capturing the excitement and enthusiasm of 1960s Doctor Who.

I’m so excited for The Evil of the Daleks animation (really disappointed I can’t watch it with my brother like we did Power back in 2016), so here’s your friendly reminder that 1966′s The Dalek Outer Space Book’s The Secret of the Emperor (in addition to expanding the state of the Dalek empire and their conflicts with the Space Security Service in the 3990s immediately prior to The Daleks’ Master Plan in 4000 AD) blatantly confirms the Golden Emperor of the 2060s to the 3900s is in fact the same immobile Human Factor craving bastard. 

(After masterminding the 22nd century Invasion of Earth, the invasion of the solar system in 2400, and manipulating events all the way to The Dalek Master Plan he was basically developing Dalek dementia so they put him in that thing, fun ain’t it?)

Dr. Who & The Daleks: The Official Story of the Films

Released initially in 1965 and 1966 respectively and directed by Gordon Flemyng, these two films, shot in glorious Technicolor, have been regenerated in out-of-this-world 4K and are the perfect collector’s item for Doctor Who and sci-fi fans. The films, which are to date the only big-screen outings for the Doctor, also boast a beloved supporting cast including Bernard Cribbins, Roberta Tovey, Roy Castle and Jennie Linden.

STUDIOCANAL will release DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS and DALEKS’ INVASION EARTH: 2150 A.D. theatrically in the UK from 10th July 2022 following a special double-bill preview at the BFI in London on June 19th. Both films will be released on 4K UHD Collector’s Editions, steelbooks and digital platforms on 20th June (DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS) and 18th July (DALEKS’ INVASION EARTH: 2150 A.D.).

DR. WHO & THE DALEKS (1965) was the first big screen film adaptation of British TV’s most iconic sci-fi hero, and the first time Doctor Who was ever seen in colour. Having invented the TARDIS, a strange machine capable of travelling into other dimensions, the Dr. Who and his three young accomplices set forth on a quest through time and space.

Their journey takes them into the dark, undiscovered depths of the universe and to the planet of Skaro, a primitive world devastated by nuclear war and populated by two warring species, a peaceful tribe known as Thals and a life form heavily mutated by radiation, encased in protective machines, a merciless force of destruction known as The Daleks!

The second film, DALEKS’ INVASION EARTH: 2150 A.D. sees Cushing return to the big screen – the future of Planet Earth now belongs to The Daleks, but deep within the London Underground a group of resistance freedom fighters are planning an attack. Can Dr. Who help them succeed in destroying their extra-terrestrial enemies and take back control of Earth?

The preview at BFI Southbank on the 19th June will see both films screened back-to-back with a special guest Q&A including cast members Roberta Tovey and Jill Curzon as well as Anthony Waye (the assistant director of both films) and Jason Flemyng, son of the films’ director, Gordon Flemyng. The Q&A will take place after ‘Dr. Who and the Daleks’ has screened and will cover both films. “The new restorations were prepared by Silver Salt, who completed work on the films in February. “These 4K remasters have utilised the original Techniscope negatives for the first time, so you’re actually seeing the first-generation images that were physically in the cameras when the film was shot,” says Anthony Badger, who’s part of the Silver Salt team. “A tremendous amount of time and effort has gone into the scanning, restoration and HDR colour grading process and the results have definitely been worth it.”

DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS and DALEKS’ INVASION EARTH: 2150 A.D. will be released as a double bill in cinemas on 10th July and available as 4K UHD Collector’s Editions, steelbooks and digital on June 20th and 18th July respectively.

The special double bill preview will take place on 19th June at the BFI.

Victory of the Daleks was originally going to have footage of classic Daleks trundling about inside the New Paradigm’s progenitor, and I’m in love with The Power of the Daleks bit! 

I’m kind’ve obsessed with the idea of the New Dalek Paradigm sort’ve being 60s Dalekmania so romanticized and untethered to its reality (more “technicolor bombastic playset” energy to the Cushing colors and energy?), and the idea that the Hartnell/Troughton Daleks really are the only “pure” Daleks in the whole history is nice? Does it for me.

Its sublimity makes me gasp. The Cowan de Groot (aka Codeg) Mechanical Dalek (Strong Clockwork with Realistic Action)! is the summit and crown of all human achievement. Forget Mozart, forget Shakespeare, Manet, Monet, Wordsworth: all that bunch and all their lesser achievements – for they are as nothing to the glory that is the Codeg Clockwork Dalek.

The following are some micro heroes of some of my own versions of the Movie universe Daleks.

Top row Static/Electric powered Daleks, most commonly seen on their homeworld of Skaro, aboard dalek space crafts and aboard dalek hoverboats.

Bottom row, Solor/Radiation powered Daleks, mostly seen of dalek invasion and landing ships and are capable of moving without a direct link to a power generator.

From left to right.

Emperor Dalek: Almost never seen off Skaro, the Emperor is the supreme leader of the Dalek race and controls all aspects of Dalek life. As the Emperor rearly ever leaves Skaro, he only has the static/Electric powered travel machine.

Gold Daleks: Next to the Emperor the Gold Daleks of the Supreme Counsil and the last say in the running of Skaro or all off world affairs. In certain circumstances, a Gold Dalek can countermand or outright ignor orders from the Emperor.

Black Daleks: The Battle and Fleet commanders of the Dalek Empire, in war time or in the midst of an invasion of an enamy planet, you will find a Black Dalek leading the advance, weather in the steamy swamps of a jungle planet or the bridge of a command ship in deep space, Black Daleks are praised for their combat skills and tactical genious. No one has ever faces a Black Dalek in combat and lived to tell the tale.

Red Dalek: Red Daleks or Pilots are skilled flyers in the dalek Empire. Generaly seen at the helm of Dalek ships from Battle Saucers to Landing ships, Red Daleks can fly out of trouble just as fast as they can fly into it. Pilot daleks as they are also known, are skilled fighters at the helm of Hoverboats and Combat Hoverboats.

Blue Daleks: Blue Daleks are the Sub-commanders of the Dalek Empire. Generaly filling the roll of Sargents and Leftenants, their main job is to convey the orders of Black daleks down to the grunts and drones of the dalek armies.

Drone or Silver Daleks: Silver Daleks or Drones are the grunts of the dalek empire, they are created for one purpose, to blindly and obideantly follow orders. Here we see 4 sub-sets of the silver drone daleks.

Electrode Unite operator: Used in the filed to active machinery remotely or to provide power to a deactivated device.

Interigation Dalek: This drone is equiped with what at first glance looks to be a Silver coloured lamp shade, however when interigating someone the light with in would flash and strobe projecting a beam of intence pain.

Detector/Scanner Dalek: Used to locate hidden enamies, pathways, trails and locate hidden doorways, the Detector or Scanner daleks are offten seen on dalek off world operations.

Standered Drone: The regular drone daleks are equiped with bothe the suction cup and grasping claw manipulators.
