Failure was not an option. It was never an option.
Yet she failed. Horribly.
Balem was gone.
Like Lucifer Fallen from Heaven, her master fell in a whirlwind of flames and destruction. The Jupiter factory was gone, destroyed in no more than an hour, by that mutt and Seraphina’s Recurrence. She wouldn’t even be able to retrieve his body, and with no choice, she escaped on her clipper. It was small and sleek; nothing fancy but it was fast. It needed to be, if she was to escape the Aegis.
Balem had several alcazars scattered across the cosmos, each as grand as the last. She went to the one he most frequented, which was where his will was located. She grabbed it and disappeared into the stars. An outlaw, wanted for crimes she couldn’t even name anymore. With her master gone, so was her protection against the things she did for him over the centuries.
Fifty years was a blink in the eye of someone who had a vast hoard of RegeneX. Hokulani was only a little vain; it was used when she could feel her bones grow brittle and her eyes grew blurry. She disappeared into the vast population of earth, forging papers and joining the humanity that she had been taken from a millennia ago. She traveled the many different countries, ever searching for her master. She would meet him again. She knew it was well as she knew herself.
Chicago was a one of many strange places she visited across the United States, and something told her it was the place to settle down. It was easy enough to blend in, acquiring a two-story cottage. It was a grotty little brick thing that needed to be fixed up, but it gave her something to do. The technology on earth, even in the 2060′s was horribly obsolete by her standards, but she made do. Now it was a waiting game.
And she would wait forever for her master.
