Damine Kabuki,The legend of origin, and today

The other day I reported how they make a temporary kabuki theater in Damine  village. Yesterday was the day of the Kabuki festival. As the frame made of logs and bamboos was covered by tarpaulin, people were able to enjoy the stage play without feeling the coldness. Not only in big cities such as Edo(Tokyo), Kyoto but in farming areas people loved/love Kabuki. Especially in farming areas they hold Kabuki festivals on specific day and village people play the actor's roles and music instruments by themselves. For example, please take a look at the sitting man in the photo below. He is a principal in this area's elementary school.

The Danime legend tells us the origin of their festival.  

In 1677 AD the important temple in Damine was destroyed by fire. People cut down many logs from the forests to rebuild it .  But one of those forests was a shogunate-owned one. It was a huge crime to cut down logs from this forest. The magistrate who took charge of this area was informed this news and tried to investigate the scene.  　

The village people in panic prayed and asked a favor of Kannon sama.  'Please help us, Kannon sama. If you deliver us from this distress  we'll dedicate Kabuki to you evermore, even if our village get smaller, until our village get only three families '

It was June ( by lunar calendar. It is July by today's calendar) when  magistrate and his followers tried to get to the scene in the forest called Dando段戸.　Suddenly it snowed severely. Deep snow on the narrow path prevented them from going any further. 

In this way the village people were able to avoid being punished.　

The village people have kept their promise. Even in the duration of ww2, they held Kabuki festival. Of course today, they do.

Asa-Dengaku is the third part of Damine-Dengaku. The word Asa means 'morning'. But actually this part is performed at night. After the second part which is called Yoru-Dengaku,  people go out to the temple yard and execute this part. They put four bonfires in the yard. And dancers wearing hats with strange decorations rush into the yard and kick those fires. It is pretty dangerous. Dancers appear one after another and kick those fires.They seem to try to prove their courage. This attractive program continue for long time. Besides we see some other kind of programs performed by masked actor. The final program is Shisi( a lion ).  Shishi goes around in the yard and kicks the fire violently. A man tries to calm it down.  He succeeds it  with great difficulty. He takes the lion to the yard edge, then a bell rings which tells us an end of the festival.

I've seen many festivals. Most of them have Shishi as the last program. Most of them Shisi behaves violently and man or god try to represses it. I think This play shows us a battle between order and disorder, or the battle between ordinary and extraordinary.  Festival is a special day. This day many gods and spirits gather to the yard. The atmosphere in the yard becomes extraordinary. In order to restart normal daily life village people must get rid of those spirits.  Shisi is a representative of those spirit. At the end of the festival man or god brings shishi under control. In this way people get normal days back.

This is a very long song called ‘TORIOI 鳥追い’, which tells us the way to get rid of the harmful birds or animals from paddy field. And as the song goes,　then the message of the song is expanded. It tells us the way or necessity of getting rid of all the things which harm to our society.

田峯田楽DAMINE DENGAKU video 日選び・田打ち

Every Feb 11th, in Damine, Shitara Town, Aichi pref, Japan, people hold 田峯田楽DAMINE DENGAKU festival wishing good harvest.

In this video clip you can see two programs of this festival. They are 日選びHIERABI and 田打ちTAUCHI. In  actual life people chose a good day ( MEDETAI HI ) to begin their farm work by the soothsaying. It is 'HIERABI' (choosing a good day).　And then people got started on their work. First it was needed to make a small paddy field to seed rice and make them sprout. To make this seedling bed they must dig the soil up.田打ちTAUCHI at this festival is a copy of this activity. Players surround a drum which represents a paddy field. And singing a song they beat the drum by the sticks as if they dug soil up.

A story of DAMINE DENGAKU 田峯田楽 03  

YORU DENGAKU 夜田楽 is the second part of DAMINE DENGAKU田峯田楽. 

They perform it in the temple building called GARAN. KANNON SAMA looks their performance. This ritual is a simulation of farm work in spring. In spring , First ,farmers make small paddy field. They plow it by hoe or using cows. And then they sow rice there. When rice seed grew up to young rice plant, then they transplant them into large paddy field. In this way annual our agricultural work starts. This ritual shows us the same process.  Its purpose is to get good harvest in autumn.

In the photo above you can see a drum and two sticks. Sticks are hoes and the drum represent a paddy field. And in the video above you can see a cow running toward good direction.

A story of DAMINE DENGAKU 田峯田楽 01

In the deep in the mountains, people had lived devout lives for generations. 田峯DAMINE is a small village in Shitara Town, Aichi pref. There is a Temple called 高勝寺 KOSHOJI where 観音様KANNON SAMA is enshrined. Every Feb 11th, people hold a 田楽DANGAKU festival in front of KANNON SAMA. It is a festival for good harvest. For a while I'd like to show you the out line of this ritual.
