Damnation Finale Thoughts

Martha came to play. First she got in Creeley’s face, then Victor’s and finally Daddy Sheriff Don ... if you came to take my son, you’ll have to get through me to do it

Handle yo business Martha. Handle it!

It’s the small things. The slight grin on Creeley’s face when he sees Bessie.

The small things. Bessie gives Creeley the article and asks if the chapel looks familiar then tells him its Colton Creek. Why am I mentioning this? It’s a subtle way for the writers to remind us that Creeley can’t read.

Creeley is an intelligent man yet never learned to read. I wonder if he’s dyslexic.

Seth handing his gun, knife and life over to Creeley ... how far these 2 have come and its beautiful.

Preston lives!!!! I have loved his drunk self since he ratted out Sam Jr. He LIVES!

Creeley, Connie, Daddy Sheriff Don ... the 3 amigos.

Great callback to the premiere when Berryman said it’s a clear case of self defense.

Seth and Amelia ... I’m rooting for them. Hope they find a way to grow closer instead of further apart.

And Amelia, I think DL’s death has pushed her over the edge. She seems to be heading toward Connie land.

When Bessie was in  that room with PhD and Tennyson ... gawd it was creepy. I know you wanna ride or die with ya cowboy but

And I’m tellin ya, Tennyson picked up on Bessie’s hesitation ... he knows something’s between her and Creeley, I know he knows it!!

The first time someone knocked on her door, Bessie offered Creeley an out but he stayed. This time he offered her an out but she stayed ... as long as she could anyway.

The first time Creeley makes Berryman ask Bessie to leave. This time he has to make her leave.

The transformation in Creeley is amazing when he’s in the presence of PhD and Tennyson. It’s like he turns into boyCreeley. His fear is so tangible.

My heart dropped when Seth told Berryman Stubbs won the election ... and then 6 head shots.

Father of The Year Award goes to ... well, Berryman you can look at it but you are on your way.

You shot me ... oh my god, oh my god I’m bleeding

I guess we know what the P in PhD stands for.

Seth’s God’s Body speech and the gunshots did give me the feel goods.

Amelia and Connie ... I refuse to believe either is dead.

Bessie started out fending for herself, all alone. Now she’s got a cowboy and sheriff by her side.

Bessie and Creeley. Their first encounter, he gave her money. Their last, he gave her everything he had. What a journey, what a journey.

Damnation - USA Network

May contain spoilers...

Are you watching this show yet? If not, WHY NOT? It’s not often that I find a show that I immediately fall in love with... it usually takes me some time to warm up to characters, to get the feeling of the storyline and if it is worth investing my time in, especially given the penchant for networks to cancel gritty witty shows that the average television watcher can’t seem to wrap their minds around. That, or to kill off a character/ship that I was so happy existed - examples include Outsiders and Into The Badlands.

So, I’m taking a risk here, getting to “know” these characters and getting drawn deeper and deeper in to their stories. This show is rife with interesting and multi dimensional characters - from the most important to the least, everyone has peaked my interest and has made me tune in now three times in a row. Two of the characters that I’m particularly focused on are Creeley Turner and Bessie Louvin (character bios here - http://www.usanetwork.com/damnation/cast/bessie-louvin). 

Bessie is a black prostitute who is helping Creeley in his quest to clear his name and to be free of his persecutor. To simply call her a prostitute would be to oversimplify what I’ve seen of her so far. Some have complained that making the only black woman on the show a prostitute is demeaning and insulting but where I might have otherwise agreed (based on how television shows have this thing about slotting black characters in to certain boxes - angry black man/woman in some position of authority who does not listen to the clearly more intelligent and astute white character, a preacher or someone with deep religious convictions, loud neck rolling tongue snapping jive talking hard ass, and on and on) and say yes this is just another generalisation, I think the fact that she’s black is right for the show. She can read for one, she’s in a position to be the eyes and ears for both herself and for Creeley and she’s brave to choose to live in that part of the country during that era doing the line of work she fell in to. The fact that Creeley chose her to help him was mainly for her services as a reader but that he looks at her as an actual human being (making people be polite to her, holding the car door open for her, buying her a dress even though he pays her handsomely, has seemingly grown to respect and TRUSTS her) and not seeing the colour of her skin tells us without saying it outright what kind of person he is. He’s also sleeping with her and has enough money to have her as his reader and still pay another white prostitute for sex - but he doesn’t. Her own father does not want the town to know that she is his daughter, but Creeley doesn’t care that half the men in town have probably slept with her due to the nature of her job, he’s fine walking around with her which ultimately gets him in a whole heap of trouble.

This week’s episode has seen them inch ever so much closer to their first kiss... which is something I suspect is major for a prostitute and major for someone who is sleeping with a prostitute (who knows where her mouth has been right?). The looks they exchanged during their sex scene told the audience that something is growing between them and it’s not only Creeley’s, er, e***tion LOL! For him to catch feelings for a prostitute wouldn’t be unheard of and from this episode we know for sure that Bessie has started to care for him (I wonder how long has passed since they first met). Will they be brave enough to see it through? Creeley is on a mission and Bessie is very independent. She’s also keeping the fact that the sheriff is her father a secret from him whereas he seems to have been answering her questions honestly and letting her know some of his plans... how will he react when he finds out? Will that trust that’s building now be broken just as she’s allowing herself to feel something for him? I really hope she didn’t sell him out to the sheriff. It wouldn’t matter anyways - his sister-in-law is literally peeping in on Creeley and Bessie so who knows how much they already knew.
