You see, on one hand, I really Do need to stop procrastinating and leaving major assignments to the last minute…

On the other hand, my ability to write and edit an absolute BANGER of a 4-page essay in under 2 hours really DOES keep me delusional… I will unfortunately be doing this again in the very near future, I fear

alright, first of all, i have only seen the episode in full once and i'm rewatching it while i write this so don't really quote me on anything.

second of all, tiny bruce wayne is tragic and so fucking traumatized and maybe this will mean that people will start understanding that batman is not cool and gritty but is actually someone who still struggles to overcome a serious childhood trauma (also, alfred pennyworth is all i want to be in terms of competence).  sidenote to this, the actor for baby bruce is sephardi jewish which is pretty awesome since they recently (by which i means sometime in the last 5ish years dont' remember when) implied in comics that martha wayne was jewish (which makes bruce ethnically jewish too) so accurate casting is great

third of all, i'm so sad about the fish mooney/penguin plotline.  it's not really any different from what i expected but i'm still sad that it seems to be what i expected.  among the multitude of plotlines i am absolutely sick to death of is the narrative of the ~*~underappreciated formerly bullied white guy who hasn't realized his full potential (possibly with some sort of "sociopathic tendencies")~*~ who resents his poc and/or female boss and wants to set himself up in their place and betrays them in order to do so.  i would much rather watch a story where that doesn't happen and instead there is loyalty and devotion and weirdly fucked up power dynamics (okay srsly penguin is so into watching her beat up that guy it's not even funny and then she calls him 'boy!' and okay i am very much into that kind of relationship don't fucking judge me annie).  i am very much hoping fish doesn't end up killed off but I am just going to live in a world where fucking pointless betrayals don't happen b/c seriously, penguin might be good at predicting what's going to happen but he is absolute shit at playing the actual game of politics and where the hell is he supposed to learn that on his own starving outside of gotham?  (also that really weird segment about the whole mother/son thing that literally makes no sense in terms of the rest of their interactions idk where it even came from but it was just gross writing and rly what the hell is his motivation for betraying her? where is this shit coming from?  u've barely tried to establish them outside of gordon damnit)

on a side note, fish mooney is like 100% bisexual and her favorite colors are all metallic and she loves tight dresses and she has an absolutely terrible sense of humor and no one ever makes fun of her name b/c they're already sick of all the goddamn puns.  you are also going to pry penguin as a trans man out of my cold and lifeless hands.  (they literally tried to kill each other in the first episode this is true otp material and it would have been so easy to rewrite their interactions into something that fucking made sense more helpless devotion less senseless rage pls (she literally beat him with a chair while screaming 'you broke my heart' what the fuck more do you want))

fourth, renee montoya is so fucking important and i'm glad she's in gotham even if it fucks up literally the entire timeline (also crispus is great) b/c bisexual barbara kean would literally be so important (especially if they actually called her bisexual but also because she pretty much doesn't exist as a character in the comics).  but mostly i'm glad renee has made it this far and i rly hope at this point that fish mooney can make the jump from screen to comics too. (but i swear if it turns into a cheating storyline i will not be held accountable for my actions)

fifth, the show being mostly jim gordon centric is not a terrible decision but he is definitely not the most interesting character so i rly want the show to move on from his pov and more to the others.  also, i feel like it's kinda weird to make so many of batman's future villains connected to james gordon it makes it feel v. conspiracy theoryish. (the actor's eyes are a v. pretty blue tho)

sixth, i require selina and baby ivy to interact at least once b/c damnit baby queer girls bonding.  i also require selina and ivy to get some real fucking lines and plotlines.

seventh (and actually last), their version of harvey bullock is very weird and not rly what i expect of harvey bullock at all, especially at this theoretical point in the timeline.  he is much more reminiscent of gordon's original partner (the rly corrupt cop flass) and i'm very curious as to why they made that change in characters.

One reason so many teachers use the debate format to promote student involvement is that it is relatively easy to set up and the rewards a re quick and obvious; the decibel level of the noise, the excitement of those who are taking part.  Showing students how to integrate ideas and explore subtleties and complexities is much harder.  And the rewards are quieter -- but more lasting.
