These photographs were taken at a demonstration called by the Moratorium NOW! Coalition to protest the killing of Damon Grimes, 15, by the Michigan State police on Gratiot and Rossini located on the east side of Detroit the afternoon of Sat. Aug. 26, 2017. The protest action took place in downtown Detroit on Sat. Sept. 2, 2017 at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Congress. 

Grimes was driving his ATV when he was tased by office Mark Bessner, who has not been charged in the crime. Grimes after being tased lost control of the ATV and crashed into the back of a pick-up trunk, later dying. Bessner was placed on paid leave penning the outcome of an internal investigation. The downtown demonstration featured several speakers including representatives of the community.

Autopsy shows Damon Grimes had Taser leads in back, head; leads recovered

Damon Grimes suffered multiple blunt injuries to his head and several lacerations, the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office report says.

A 15-year-old Detroit teen was Tasered from behind, in his head and lower back, as he fled from police while riding on a ATV that crashed, autopsy results indicate.  

The leads from a "conducted electrical weapon" were recovered and retained during the autopsy, according to a report released today by the Wayne County Medical Examiners Office. Earlier Friday, there was a court hearing related to allegations that a state police employee discarded physical evidence from the Taser.  

Grimes was riding his ATV Aug. 26 on Detroit's east side when Trooper Mark Bessner attempted to stop him, sources have said. Bessner allegedly fired a Taser shock gun at Grimes out of the window of a patrol car. Grimes then crashed his all-terrain vehicle into a truck.

Grimes suffered multiple blunt injuries to his head; several contusions, lacerations and abrasions on this body; and other injuries, the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office report says. His death was ruled an accident.

No alcohol or drugs were found in his system, according to toxicology test results.

It's a violation of Michigan State Police policy to deploy a Taser from a moving vehicle.

Bessner was suspended and subsequently resigned Sept. 22. Two other state police employees were suspended Sept. 26 in connection with Grimes' death, according to a state police spokeswoman.

The Detroit Police Department and the Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.

Attorney Geoffrey Fieger has filed a $50 million lawsuit over the teen's death.

Damon Grimes, a 15-year-old African-American youth riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on Aug. 26 died of injuries from an accident after he was tasered by Michigan State Police officer Mark Bessner from his police vehicle on the East Side of Detroit. 

Grimes lost control of his ATV, crashed into a pickup truck and suffered a head trauma, dying later in a local hospital.

This incident, which amounts to a brutal racist murder by the Michigan State Police — really an occupation army — has aroused a series of demonstrations and legal actions.

Police were forced to temporarily close a Detroit street last night as a crowd protested the death of a black teenager who crashed an all-terrain vehicle after a state trooper shocked him with a Taser.

The protest began as a vigil started for 15-year-old Damon Grimes at the east side intersection where the crash occurred.

Michigan Radio's Kate Wells described the incident:

"Around 5:30 on Saturday afternoon, state police troopers assigned to a post in Detroit’s 9th precinct saw an ATV four wheeler driving recklessly, a spokesman said. They turned around to pursue the driver, with lights and siren on, but the driver didn’t stop for six city blocks while heading east along Rossini towards Gratiot Avenue.

"At some point during this pursuit, a white trooper shot the teenage driver with a Taser.

"The ATV driver ... attempted to drive onto a sidewalk, but crashed into the back of a pickup truck. Police say they immediately administered first aid, but the teen was pronounced dead at the hospital."

More than 200 people gathered along Gratiot Avenue. Some shouted obscenities at police. No arrests were made and no one was ticketed.
