What Now: Town Hall
You know that Norman Rockwell painting, “Freedom of Speech”? A working class man stands up in a town hall setting amongst his fellow citizens and speaks his mind about an important issue? It’s now a great meme. But it’s also a big lie.
A while ago I watched a video on Instagram showing police attacking a woman speaking at a town hall on data centers. I “liked” it and now the algorithm across the Metaverse is trained to show me more videos of citizens speaking their minds to town councils about not only data centers, but also ICE, gerrymandering, and other dangers to their community. The result is always the police arresting them in some violent manner. In one video the crowd comes to the defense of a skinny 14 year old girl, one man yelling at the cops, “Don’t touch her!” She was untouched but still forced out of the room. In another a man is forced to the ground and zip-tied. His crime? Clapping.
Town councils use the police to protect themselves from potential harm by the public and to maintain order. In theory this seems reasonable, except that the public has only an eventual vote to protect themselves from the town council. The data center problem seems to have exacerbated the situation, as town councils do a lot of work behind closed doors to strike up data center construction deals with big tech companies and invite as little public input or oversight as possible. Councils will hold mandatory public comment sessions, but allow only two minutes for speakers to say their peace and refuse follow up questions. Anyone who over extends their time gets kicked out of the room or arrested by the thugs in blue.
The vote recourse itself is also under threat. Recently in Missouri a town held a recall vote to remove half the members of its council, yet the council refused to leave, citing a technicality that maintained the county had to be included in the vote. I have no idea if the council is right, but it seems pretty strange that a vote could be held at all if it didn’t follow procedure.
There are many reasons I oppose most of the AI-related activity we have seen over the past few years: plagiarism, impacts on workers, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, hallucinations, slop, Flock cameras. Now add undermining our democracy and civil liberties to the pile.
ICE is spending millions on shock gloves designed to overpower subjects through intense, localized pain.

With the revelation that ICE will spend up to $20 million by March on gloves that can deliver painful electric shocks to subdue an individual, according to a notice published earlier this week by the Department of Homeland Security, it's worth looking at how this apparel, designated as a nonlethal tool for law enforcement, actually works.
These shock gloves go by the unsubtle acronym of GLOVE (Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter) and are manufactured by Compliant Technologies, based in Lexington, Kentucky. The GLOVE, previously used in jails and police departments in the US, looks and functions like a normal pair of patrol gloves until officers press a switch to activate an electrical mode.
Classified as a CD3 (conductive distraction and de-escalation device), the gloves don't work like stun guns or Tasers, which shoot out probes or use high voltages to cause neuromuscular incapacitation that overrides the central nervous system. Instead, the GLOVE works using neuro-peripheral interference, essentially shocking the skin to bombard the sensory nerves and temporarily short-circuit the brain's focus.
Compliant Technologies did not respond to WIRED's request for comment....
Crucially, the GLOVE has limitations, chief among them that for the device to work effectively and deliver its restraining pain shock, it must come into contact with the subject's bare skin. According to Compliant Technologies, the gloves won't work through dry clothing or thick hair. The gloves will work, however, if the subject is wearing thin, wet clothing, such as soaked T-shirts or blouses. The GLOVE also does not like being dunked in water and will likely be rendered inoperable if this happens.
Michael Crowley, a senior researcher at Omega Research Foundation—an organization that tracks human rights abuses committed across the world by people using police, security, and military equipment—is concerned that the GLOVE is seemingly designed not to restrain or incapacitate, but to hurt.
“CD3 technology inflicts pain," Crowley says. "The company talks about it as a de-escalation solution, but the whole idea of it is to get control or influence somebody through pain. Omega considers it to be an inherently abusive technology that should not be manufactured, sold, or used by law enforcement officials, including ICE.”
I am extremely angry right now. Having had my day ruined again upon seeing the dashcam of a slimy old Arkansas trooper violating a teenager over a seatbelt liquor bottle speeding incident at night, illegally, and hearing no updates today too is really gut wrenching.
I really hate saying this and I mean I really don't wanna do this, but this would never be done to a Caucasian person. The kid was all alone on the road at night and you've got this nasty ass pathetic sorry excuse for a cop hitting her on the ground going "who says I can't" because he's going to be protected by the state.
And he's still working. He's still out there, not on leave, but he's still working.
