The Circus In Winter!!!!!
First and for most I would like to say that after reading this book I personally liked how well Cathy Day broke up each character by giving their back story within each chapter of the book. In doing so, it made readers get a good understanding on each character and also find out the character’s differences and similarities among each chapter of the book. But in the last chapter, we focus on Ollie, son of hand who was a clown within a clown act with his friend Jojo to an owner of a dry cleaners named Clown Alley Cleaners. Within the chapter, we see the life story of Ollie, started from being born in a barn and progressing there. He did face some many tragedies such as not really knowing his father and also the sad death of his mother. Although, the book includes his life of adulthood. Some good time with Jojo as they go out into town and have sex with line up girls. In addition, as he started to get older, he feel in love with Mildred and married her when she was sixteen. The relationship again was a good one but they still keep together going through the ups and down of the circus and their lives.
Bascomb’s Story
For this book, I extremely enjoy the backgrounds of each character being told in every chapter. As I started reading, it was very easy staying focused because each chapter focused one particular character unlike the other book who had me puzzled trying to figure out who was doing what? So back to the post, in this book it tell the hard story of Bascom, a negro whose job was to clean up the pot where the whites shit and pissed on. Being raised and breaded by a slave mother, Bascomb had to grow very quick especially when his mother passed when he was 15 years old. As I came to the end of this chapter, I detected a lot of the racism that was going on during Bascomb’s life. Not only the mistreatment Bascomb endured because he was a slave, but also the mistreatment he endured when he was set free and joining the cirrus. Although, as the chapter progressed, I read on the great adventures Bascomb went through, I kept up with ups and down Bascomb faced. In addition, I was especially happy to see how he loved his wife pearly and also his mad love for Asian elephant.
Episode 3
In episode 3, I finally get a better understanding on what powers both Ben and father Justin have. In addition, I also agree to ocho’s statement on how Ben is an angel but I prefer Brother Justin as a demon rather than a devil. In addition, I also find it ironic on the ways these powers are being used in terms to situations the characters faces. For example, Ben is a lonely adult who was picked up by the circus. As he knew that he had this healing power, he tried to keep to it a secret because in order to heal something another thing must die. Although as his actions came to known, the circus decided to use his power as a way to make money. on the other side, we have Brother Justin, a man who proclaims god’s word but has a dark power in which the people who try to deny his ways will face many awful ways of death. So the ironic thing is why would father Justin, being faithful and god’s disciple, possess such evil power when Ben, a member of the carnival, who is a part of the lies in which is used to scam people of their money possess the power of healing.
R.I.P.
As I finished reading the book, I have to say that did not think it would end out like this. Especially the fact how Oly would do such a thing and kill her mama Lil. That was the biggest WTF moment I had all year. The statement is true that it is the innocent ones who turn out to be the most sinister. Although, I do have to have to go forward with my logic that Arty is a dick. I have to agree with Chris B. on the how different the story would have been if Arty wasn't a dick or if he didn’t have any taste of power due to the religious cult he started. Although, I can know see that Arty was mad with power and with that power he brought trouble which teared the family apart. Well as last thought, I wondered how different the story line and the end turn out would have been if Al and Lil gave each of their children equal amounts of attention. I wonder if that would have stopped Arty from forming that religious cult, or stop oly from killing her Lil, or stopped the whole tent burning down and killing majority of the characters.
