Burfict and Pac-Man and the Flood Gates of Racism

I tried watching some of the first half of the Steelers-Bengals game but it was more boring than the average football game, there is no “playoff feel” in the NFL, and with McCarron it seemed unlikely things were not going to get interesting. I happened to check in and see the score with 28 seconds left and managed to get it streaming just in time to see Antonio Brown get his head taken off and all the ensuing stuff.

And I loved it. Ridiculous dumbassery is usually the best possible outcome to any sporting event. For this to happen, with those two guys as the screwups, screwing up in that exact way, was too good to be true. 

In the moment, it was great. And it’s still pretty great. But it was so great that it actually made me look and see if there was anything good being written about it. Any good quotes in a recap, etc. And exposing myself to the commentary of the media is where it has gone a bit askew.

Because that it is these two guys screwing up in this way, it is fresh meat for the people who want a chance to go at some dudes that have been rubbing them wrong for years. Who can call them out, after what these guys did?

I, like everyone else, do not know all the rules of the NFL. But it seems like the Bengals have some sort of point about Joey Porter being on the field getting into everything. 

No matter! It’s open season, and we gotta get our shots in while we can. 

So you get stuff like Dan Weasel at Yahoo!, tossing aside any such concern:

It's always someone else's fault of course. It's always something else, of course.

"That's why Adam pushed him," Burfict said. "[Porter] shouldn't be on the field cussing us out. The ref heard it all but the ref threw the flag on Adam."

It dawned on neither player that they shouldn't have drilled Brown in the head or cared what some retired player was or wasn't saying in the moment.

Is Porter supposed to be on the field? Maybe the better question is whether he is supposed to be headed to Denver next week for another game, maybe with Roethlisberger and Brown, maybe without, but his team still alive regardless? What possibly could someone say that was worth a playoff game?

What we have here is a situation where the refs may have really screwed up by ignoring the transgressions of Porter. At the end of a playoff game. Giving the Steelers a chip shot field goal to advance. This is right up the alley of current NFL coverage. Media should be all over it. 

But it’s not important now while we have a chance to take some shots at these guys!

For Dabo Swinney it represented dirt-cheap housing, which still was more he could really afford. He and a friend from back home in Pelham, Ala. each paid $130 a month for Unit 81, a simple two bedroom. He was a sophomore, attempting to become the first member of his family to graduate from college while surviving as a walk-on wide receiver for the vaunted football program. He was also bringing to college a rather unusual accessory … his mother, Carol, a third roommate in an apartment not exactly designed for parents. Andrew Harrison and the Inherent Racism of the Basketball Bias in the US

By now, everyone knows the story: a frustrated black kid used the n-word, by accident, on microphone, in front of a room full of angry old white men all of whom reacted like a group of teenage girls at a Jonas Brothers Concert. They got an even juicier front page story than was expected and Andrew Harrison got skewered on websites across America.  Let’s consider it an early introduction the NBA life he’s certain to experience very soon: a complicit media writing meaningless pieces that derive hits from racist idiots.

Press reaction to Harrison’s gaffe ranged from somewhat understanding to laughably ridiculous, but a good chunk of it was designed to do one thing: drive up shares, views, and comments by the idiotically racist white man that is the average NCAA fanatic.  The message boards and Facebook homes of these sites are littered with fans waiting to jump on any slip-up, especially by any player likely to leave college early for the pro game.  The boards are always loosely moderated, because... money. Moderation ain’t cheap and getting hits ain’t easy.

But don’t just blame sports columns, they’re playing to a crowd, inherent racism is the story of amateur sports in the twenty-first century, it’s the last bastion of the frustrated, moderately-racist white male.  It’s the last place they have to hide, where they can stand in a crowd and be openly hostile to the very group of people to whom which their entertainment is beholden, and the establishment sports media is more than happy to throw them fodder.

Even a cursory look at some of the most common criticisms of the professional game, all of which are ludicrous, but are almost always cited as reasons why white fans love the college game and not the professional one.

They don’t play defense.

You’ll hear this one in any discussion of the NBA, and it’s immediately identifiable as racist horse shit.  Who is “they”? The predominantly black staff on every NBA team?  Why don’t they play defense?  “Because they’re lazy black guys,”  should be the following statement, it’d be more honest.

The professional players just don’t care.

Again, more of the black laziness argument.  They obviously don’t care about perpetuating their income, they made more money in one year than most guys do in their whole life, right?

They just play 1 on 1.

More “they” crap, more insinuation that black guys are more interested in self-promotion than winning.

I like watching the amateurs play.

“I like watching kids get exploited so everybody else gets rich off their talent.  But hey, they get a good education, right?”  Unless they go to UNC or West Virginia, maybe.

Let’s face it, a lot of people think the NBA is nothing but a bunch of pot smoking lazy guys clearing out the lane and taking the ball to the basket at will. In America, you’re entitled to your idiotic opinion, but you’re not entitled to a catering media. Guys like Dan Wetzel, writers that piled onto a competitive black kid to drive up hits from racists, are the worst.  Stop reading them.
