Concert Review: Sarah Jaffe at Dan’s Silver Leaf (Denton, TX)
As an avid music fan living and working in Dallas, Texas, Sarah Jaffe is a name I have heard repeatedly for the past half-decade or so. She has been the featured “local artist” at many music festivals I have attended in the area and she has long been strongly-endorsed by local independent music station, KXT.
Despite my consistent curiosity over this local and highly-acclaimed songstress, until recently I had sadly allowed Jaffe to be one of many talented indie musicians with only one song in my iTunes library. This song, “Clementine”, a beautiful and heart-wrenching ballad of jealousy and regret, would pop up during workouts and car-trips when my music was set to shuffle and would always strike a nerve in a very good way.
The moment I started to see the light which is the true depth and breadth of Jaffe’s fierce talent occurred a few weeks ago when I decided to finally see the 30-year-old perform live at Dan’s Silver Leaf in her hometown of Denton, Texas. Not fully comprehending Jaffe’s dedicated local following, I was surprised to discover her Saturday show at DSL was quickly sold out! Luckily, Jaffe had generously scheduled a second performance the following night, but when I went to purchase tickets for this show, I again was dismayed to find that it TOO was sold out. Thankfully, I have a good friend who is more on-the-ball and was able to snag two tickets for Jaffe’s second show before my failed efforts.
Opening with the super-catchy, yet intimate “Defense”, Jaffe showed off her way-better-than-your-average-indie-singer vocals and cast her spell on the capacity crowd. With impressive musical range, consistently strong vocals, and charming stage presence, Jaffe put on a mesmerizing performance which lasted through the entirety of her set. A few of the many highlights included her biggest “hit”, “Clementine”, as well as the jazz-infused “Slow Pour” from her latest record, Don’t Disconnect (on which I will probably eventually do an album review because it is a revelation).
If you live in the Dallas area and missed these two performances in Denton, do not fret because Jaffe will be playing at Granada Theater on March 31st. Make sure you get your tickets in time so you don’t miss out on the magic like I almost did!
Just got done at Dan's Silver Leaf in Denton, where me and Mike went to see The Mountain Goats, and I discovered this little gem of a band, loamlands! Great performance tonight, guys, hope to see you around again! Looking forward to seeing y'all get famous.
