Dance history/ wish list
Three years ago I had no dance experience. I never imagined I would become so passionate about dance. I've always been very musical. I play a few instruments and have sung since I was little, but I never thought that I could be a dancer.
When I came to college I had the chance to start learning Argentine Tango and Belly Dance. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made and I've been dancing ever since :) The following is a list of my dance history/experience:
Belly dance - 3 years (this is year 4) Currently I am most comfortable with Tribal Fusion, but I can also dance other styles. I've learned American Cabaret, Egyptian Folkloric, Egyptian Oriental, American Tribal Style (ATS), and a tiny bit of Turkish Oriental.
Argentine Tango - 2 full years and 1 year off and on. Tango taught me how to follow, improved my balance, and increased my musicality ten fold. I haven't had time to fit tango into my life lately and that really needs to change!
Salsa, Bachata, & Merengue - I've gone out dancing once every few weeks for the last 2 1/2 years. I've never had the chance to take salsa lessons, and I really really want to! Out of the three, bachata is my favorite.
I was part of a south east asian fusion dance team for about 6 months. It was fun, but incredibly painful. It wasn't choreographed to be very body safe...ah the folly of my youth lol.
Hula & Tahitian - I've been learning hula and tahitian since Jan 2013. I love it so much! :) There are a lot of similar movements and isolations that I've learned from belly dance, so I'm able to pick it up pretty quickly.
Bhangra - I started learning bhangra this September (2013). I love it :) It's such a high energy and fun dance.
Kathak - I just started taking kathak lessons. I'm completely obsessed. I just started dancing with my ghungroos (ankle bells) last week :D
Kizomba - I had the good fortune of dancing salsa with a Kizomba instructor a couple of weeks ago. We danced salsa first and then we danced to a few kizomba songs. It's like a cross between Argentine tango and bachata...needless to say, I was hooked. I've gone to one kizomba workshop so far, and would like to attend many more. I haven't been able to yet because of school conflicts.
I think that covers everything so far. Now here's my list of dances I would like to learn :D
Contemporary
Ballet
Odissi
Bollywood (I've danced a little, but haven't studied it)
Flamenco
Lyrical Hip-hop (aka NappyTabs choreography)
I want to take an African dance class aside from the african dancing I already do from church; but my mom thinks I am addicted to dance classes, especially since I am taking 3 already
