The hamstrings are a very important muscle group for dancers and just humans in general. This muscle group shown in the picture above are so strong and without them we couldn't walk. Now relating this to dance, we bend and stretch our hamstrings from the very first pilé that you are taught. I had a realization today that my legs have a lot more length then i allow them. When i say this i mean that they are longer that i have ever noticed. I noticed this while we laid on the floor for our first exercise. It was a simple hold of the foot and pilé and straightening. During this time i couldn't reach my foot due to the length that i had in my hamstrings today. This also could be because of my lower back but my legs seemed to find new lengths within a few simple stretches. I wanted to mention this in my last post so ill do it right here. When starting class we start on the floor, and this makes our focus much more precise and in no way is easier. By being on the floor you don’t have to put the weight of your upper body on your legs as the floor takes all your weight. This allows more freedom to move and easier to focus on our hamstrings. While on the floor, we turned on our sides and did a few leg lifts in a seated position to work on out turnout as we did the last class. Luis then tied our hamstrings and turnout beautiful in a leg swing/ stretch. Something about floor work makes me feel lighter and obviously that is because the floor takes all my weight. Luis main focus with the hamstrings was to find the length and stretch within our hamstrings. We then moved to our across the floor combo that put emphasis on our hamstrings and forced us to find the extra length and distance. We then took what we learned about our hamstrings from the warm up and across the floor and added it on to our phrase.
I really enjoy this method of teaching Luis is doing with us. It really ties the ideas and concepts together beautifully. When we keep adding on movement to our phrase that has emphasis in a specific part of our anatomy we will end up having a complete phrase that will keep us thinking and aware of our body positions and muscle usage.
Something also i want to talk about is breathing and how i struggle with it so much. Over the years i have gotten better as i have became more aware when i am clenching and holding my breathe. Luis tells us that one of the most effective ways to use your breath is to first inhale, then exhale as you start the exercise. This allows for more release and less tension when working on muscle groups. Breathing is so essential to us humans that i honestly think i take it for granted some days. When i do breathe i feel the release and the length that comes from such a simple action. I find myself in all my other classes constantly reminding myself to breathe. I want to be the best and smartest dancer i can be so once i find an issue i try to do everything in my power to correct it.
From the warm-up all the way to the last words of class, i always leave REFRESHED ! Modern calls for an extreme amount of energy from the body but I don’t find myself exhausted or ready to leave. Instead i wish we had 40 more minutes to build the stamina and really hone in the focus of the class. I truly love this class and my teacher Luis makes it that much better. I am constantly finding discoveries in every class i attend.
